Dinky Dawson Soundboards

Post by nick257 »

Theres another of Dinky Dawson's soundboards up on Wolfgang's vault today - Ashland college 13th March 1973:
http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/lou-reed- ... -1973.html

I had the pleasure of communicating with Dinky Dawson himself - he did sound for the 1973 Tots tour, the 1973 Berlin tour and the 1978 tour. This is what he said about further soundboards to come from the Tots and 1978 tours:

"I'm not sure when any of the early 1973 Lou Reed shows will be posted. There are not many recordings of that time period and 1978 too. It is possible the tape may have deteriorated. You just never know till the restoration/mastering people do their thing".

I also asked him about a few specific Berlin 1973 shows, and this is what he said:

"The Lenox Lou Reed show was recorded as it was the first one after rehearsals. The interesting thing is a writer/fan/musician recorded in stereo at the back of the field and when we started playing with my board recording and his we started flipping out due to front and rear natural sound around. This one might end up as an audio DVD but not for a while, a lot of work to master this one. I think Lou might have the Crystal Palace show and who knows where that is now".

I bought a copy of his book from him (highly recommended and difficult to get hold of), which he signed.

Thank you nick257 for this good news!
Sometimes it's always the same. The best songs, for example Sister Ray, are incomplete; :( , but the solo-guitar-playing is incredible. What would this song become to the listener when it were complete? However, The show is great and Lou and the Tots are in best form.

Well here's an interesting one:

Lou Reed and Moogy Klingman band, 2nd May 1973, Kansas
http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/lou-reed- ... -1973.html

I never knew about this backing band, did anybody else? A soundboard show with versions of Hanging round, Andy's Chest and Make Up.

From the write-up:
He toured with The Tots for much of 1972 and early 1973 and delivered many fine live performances with the oft-bootlegged 1972 set from Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead, NY being a prime example. Regardless, criticism of the band was relentless and this eventually took its toll. Despite a tour scheduled, Reed would unceremoniously fire his band.

Enter Mark "Moogy" Klingman, who with little more than a weeks notice was handed the responsibility of assembling a new band in time to fulfill the obligations of the remaining leg of Reed's tour. The mixing desk recording presented here, despite it's somewhat deteriorated state, finally provides the ability to clearly hear an entire Reed performance with Klingman's band on the Transformer Tour before an enthusiastic audience at Kansas City's Memorial Auditorium in May 1973.

Lou Reed - lead vocals
Mark "Moogy" Klingman - keyboards, backup vocals
Tom Cosgrove - lead guitar, backup vocals
Ralph Shuckett - rhythm guitar, backup vocals
"Buffalo" Bill Gelber - bass
Chocolate - drums

Wow; that's a different show for sure. I started not liking Sister Ray, but it grew on me. It's not bad. I don't think I remember hearing about this band line up.

I really like the Kansas show with the Moogy backing band. Its the closest to the transformer album sound that I've heard in a live show from Lou.

Some recollections from Moogy found on the web from back in 1999:

9/14/99 The artist I was band leader for, was Lou Reed, who, at that time had his only top ten single "Walk on the Wild Side", produced by David Bowie. Touring with Moogy and the Rhythm Kings - then a few months later a tour with Lou Reed followed by forming and touring with TR's Utopia...wow! A study in contrasts. Lou Reed had more people nodding out on downs, in his audiences than I have ever seen, before or since. The final song of his set was "Heroin" a 20-minute number where he pretended to shoot up!!!!!!!... I guess his message was "nod out". Where TR's 30-minute number was "the Ikon"... elevating the masses to a new spiritual level thru some of the most intense rock music ever played. The Utopian was Ralph Schuckett, who was my best friend at the time. Only one keyboardist was needed - so Ralph filled in on second guitar. And he wore a silver jacket like Elvis. Pretty funny... one of America's greatest rock keyboardists playing rhythm guitar for a whole tour behind the "Heroin" songster. On lead guitar and harmony vocals, I selected Tom Cosgrove, who played in TR's band with me, Stu Woods, and N.D. Smart. I think it was called Runt, but maybe something else. Any historians here? Cosgrove, who had a slight drinking problem, bonded with Lou and his drinking problem, and sometimes they were sooooo drunk when we hit the stage... My fault. I didn't know either of them had a drinking problem before the tour, or I woulda left Tommy at home. Reed had fired his whole band one-week before the tour and I had four days to find the guys - rehearse them and hit the road. Buffalo Bill Gelber was along for the ride on the bass. And a completely wild black guy named only "Chocolate" was on drums. The crowds were nuts... but Reed was a failure as a rock and roll front man, at least on that tour...he couldn't sing, and some of the time, at least, he could hardly stand up (drinking and maybe pills or something...) fans were more often than not, very disappointed. Just imagine, the difference... playing with TR. He was the supreme front man, singer, performer and "visionary". So, I'm still in shock, that Lou Reed still has a major label deal and a lot of respect. Where TR has no label deal, and is mostly a forgotten man (outside of his extremely loyal fan base)...Irony of Ironies. Moogy

I used to wonder how Lou went from the Tots to the Berlin tour.............The Moogy Klingman band is the missing link..............see the setlist from this new show up on Wolfgang's vault - it looks like the Berlin tour started earlier than we thought (19th May 1973!):

I am listening to this gig now. Certainly fills the gap between the Tots and the Hunter/Wagner band. Band is tight, Lou is a bit uneven, but a fun show!

wow!

I'm listening to it right now and can hardly believe it. As the notes say, the difference between this show and the previous "moogy" show just a few weeks earlier is tremendous. The "Berlin" songs are pretty much fully formed/arranged.
The band are indeed much tighter even if Lou's vocals are a bit rough in places. Great version of "Sad Song".

Go to WV and listen!

I'm 90% sure this is the wagner/hunter band mislabeled as the Kingman band. The arrangements are identical to Rock n Roll Animal/Lou reed Live and nothing at all like the keyboard dominated sound of other recordings of Lou with the Klingmen. Listen to how different this is:
