I bet they let Nico have it because they didn't think that much of it themselves.
I'm sure they could have made something of it... For example, if the version of "ATM" on said demo, as well as the version of "Venus" that Cale sings on it and the variations of it we heard on the Warhol Tapes would've been the only versions of "ATM" & "Venus" (thank god they're not, phew!) we wouldn't think much of those songs either, would we?

Are you talking about the PS&S Disc 1 version of Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams? I don't know what would go on in a person's head to possess him to make music like that. Weren't they into a certain technique that centered around "almost complete droning"? I guess it was one of those odder 60's experiments. What ridiculous results though. Maybe over time they could have done some exciting things with that technique, but it didn't happen on that take. Ugggh. That demo should have gone along with Prominent Men into oblivion.

Hehe, of course some of us (me!) would argue you haven't begun to live 'till you've been almost completely droned by the Velvets!

Ever heard "Metal Machine Music"? The majority of people would call it (have called it) unlistenable garbage. I love it. You know what I call it? Seriously, I call it "a cathedral of random drones." That's the term I've coined to explain to people the majesty and beauty I find in it. Same with Cale's "New York In The Sixties" and "Day Of Niagara" stuff. I'm huge on the drone, and nothing I've heard touches it like the Velvets.

I want a bumper sticker that reads, "Drone, baby, drone!"
I don't know what would go on in a person's head to possess him to make music like that.
Peel slowly and see... :P

The 'drone' stuff is my fav. Neither gave much thought to MMM (never heard it actually). Before I go seek it out, are there any free-to-hear snipits to whet my apetite?

I really like Metal Machine Music. I don't crank it, but at a middle volume it's really good. I like listening to it late at night/early morning. You could hear snippets at amazon.com. Multiply that by an hour and you have MMM. Zaireka or something like that, some european noise band, covered MMM with an orchestra and asked Lou to play fourth guitar or something.

Yes, there is an interesting interview with Zeitkratzer in the Wire magazine last month, the guy talks a little about the creation of their version of MMM and Lou's relation to the project.
