Re: Beck to re-record VU & Nico
very good. Actually Richard Cheese is a "lounge-type" singer who is very clever. I have heard him on the O & A show a few years back and he did a lounge parody of a song called "sh--dick" by a miserable neo-nazi punk band called Panzer Faust. Needless to say his version takes the hate out of their gaybash dirge.bobbldr wrote:or might be similar to Mike Hunt?

Re: Beck to re-record VU & Nico
The Mike Flowers Pops Orchestra did a VU medley on the 1996 'A Groovy Place' ? it was All Tomorrow's Parties/Venus in Furs/White Light/White Heat. I first heard it playing in a CD remainder shop in Richmond, Surrey, in the late 90s and for a few minutes (until the moment Flowers started singing 'Shiny shiny shiny boots of leather') I thought that I must have stepped through into a parallel universe.velvetfan wrote:Is Mike Flowers similar to Richard (Dick) Cheese?
would love to compare mike flowers' cover of "vu & nico" to beck's.
I believe I saw it on a blog called 'musistenz' just the other minute...
I have never heard him but I think Richard Cheese (ha ha) recycled the rock-as-lounge-music idea later.

Re: Beck to re-record VU & Nico Heroin
Heroin is up now. I HATE this one!

Re: Beck to re-record VU & Nico Heroin
Well here is an IMHO comment I have been saving up for whatever reason.velvetfan wrote:Heroin is up now. I HATE this one!
My favorite post VU versions of Heroin that Lou Reed has tied off to are:
1)Bottom Line NYC June 5 or 6 1979, incredible drumming a false ending and then
the real one. A bit upbeat in its power but not as cluelessly cheery as the official version
on Rock and Roll Animal (then there is that cheesy horror film organ playing in the pre-rushing on
the run section,) just good old flesh and blood punchiness.
2)Carre Hall Amsterdam October 15 1979, with Michael Fonfara provided lovely keyboards until
the final rush and then the whole band slams into it.
3)Columbia University NYC Sept 21 1979/Palacio Deportes Barcalona Spain October 4 1979, both similar in being
dragged out and the anti climatic funny (to me) closing comment by Lou. (We share a similar sense of humor
at times.)
4)"Live in Italy" official release, despite Lou's hoarse vocals the same arrangement as
the Rock and Roll Animal version is put to better use IMHO. Lou and Bob Quine provide the appropriate
atmosphere with their guitars. I love how Lou holds the note as he sings "Heeeerrrrrrooooiiinnn......"
holding it as the sound builds then hitting that power chord. The ending is magnificent but not
cheery, just powerful.
There I feel better, until tomorrow, but that is just another time.

Okay, time for me to stand up for Doug Yule. Doug is a talented bass player & keyboard player and is an ok singer, great on the VU songs that Lou had him sing. Beck is a hack who got awfully lucky getting a record deal. That's my 2 cents worth.velvetfan wrote:where's beck? that's not beck. that's doug yule.

no, you're right. doug yule's great. he just didn't know when to quit using the velvet underground name.
but, in regard to beck being lucky to get a record deal....doesn't make much sense. he wrote a big hit. how did the velvet underground get a record deal?
