i disagree. i've never heard better covers of these songs.

then again, the only velvet covers i've heard are on "fifteen minutes" and "heaven & hell."

i thought they were all poop.

beck's covers, or anyone's covers for that matter, of this first album will definitely not come anywhere close to the original album, that just goes without say.

but are they reminiscent of the album's attitude?

i think so.

he's going to make a lot of people pick up the first velvet underground album. and they are all going to have their eyes and ears opened by the masters themselves. which is a cool thing for him to do.

that makes beck rad to me.

To remake a classic album is foolhardy unless you can outshine it, improve on it. Like movie remakes, the best kind of album to remake is the 'b' list album. There's no long tall shadow to get out from under.

I'd be more interested if he remade Squeeze. At least that might be funny.

How about Live at Max's Kansas City, last ditch versions of a cross range of VU songs.
He could have actors like Johnny Depp portraying Jim Carroll, and Kevin Federline
shouting out "It's fun to listen to you," Jennifer Aston(sp) saying, "but what he
says is true," and Brad Pitt retorting "biddy bababa" (or whatever is the response there).

i think foolhardy is the absolute correct word to use. i'm pretty sure beck, and everyone, knows that one can't outshine or improve "the velvet underground & nico." that should just go unsaid.

but take for instance, the easy star all star's "dub" version of dark side of the moon. it's a remake that i enjoyed because it wasn't like the original, but it made me appreciate the original in a different light since i'd heard the original about a trillion times.

granted, i think the easy stars did dark side better than beck's doing VU&N, but beck did all these songs in one day. pretty good for one day of recording i think! and very much in the attitude of the velvet underground i think.

i dunno. just my beck lovin opinion. i have all his stuff as well as all the velvet underground's stuff. he's definitely a huge fan, which i think is the ultimate and probably most important prerequisite to covering a band's work.

Run Run Run is up now; unique rendering for sure but there is something I like about it.

Is Mike Flowers similar to Richard (Dick) Cheese?
