John Cale in Tel Aviv

Post by marknaveh »

Cale opened a new leg on his european tour last night with a great, intimate show in a small Tel Aviv club in front of a warm and appreciative crowd. (It was a no smoking gig - "by request of the artist" - and amazingly everyone repected it). One nice surprise -- not only did he play Venus In Furs, the show opener, he also gave us "an experiment - two songs in one": Femme Fatale crossed over with Rosegarden Funeral of Sores (really obscure -- I had to do a lyric check on the net to find it!). Fantastic band he has with him. Gun was unbelievable, the highlight of the show. The rest of the set list included Woman, Helen of Troy, Dancing Undercover, Turn the Lights On, Look Horizon, Magritte, Things, Dirty Ass Rock 'N' Roll, Buffalo Ballet, Ship of Fools, Guts, Hush, Outta the Bag, Perfect, Sold Motel, Leaving It. Encores were Gravel Drive, Pablo Picasso and Close Watch.

It was all live -- he started with a verse and chorus of Femme, crossed over to a verse of Rosegarden, then repeated the process, finishing off with some more "Femme Fatales". He played keyboards throughout.

I can NEVER find any Cale work in Best Buy or in CD stores, which I find annoying because I'm really interested in hearing his solo work.

There's a video of Woman from the second night in Tel Aviv here:

Plus a review of the show if anyone reads Hebrew.

I'm seeing him twice next month. He's bound to play Femme Fatale on one of those shows.

By the way, when did he perform The Gift/Frozen Warnings? How did that work exactly?

He played fozen warnings on the hobosapiens tour.
He had alot of computer noise behind some songs during the show.
During Frozen Warnings he had the gift playing in the background.
it sounded like they were playing it right from white light / white heat
, not a live version.

Here is a show from that tour
