Lou Reed's favourite music?

Post by The Bells »

Has Lou Reed ever listed his favourite music, or records which have influenced him?

I have totally forgotten the details but there's a bar somewhere (maybe in Germany?) where they get bands to pick the jukebox selection for a month at a time or something. About 10 yrs ago Lou wa asked to do it. There was some activity on an old email list to get all the tracks together on a comp CD, but I don't know how far they got. it would make interesting listening. I have enjoyed the Dylan radio shows!

It was mostly 50s doo wop and rnr, plus some 60s free jazz etc. I remember obscure vocal groups, Chuck Berry, Do Diddley, Cecil Taylor and maybe Ornette Coleman too. Sort of what you'd expect. No modern music at all!
The guys at the LR forum will remember better than me.

Cale was on the BBC radio show Desert Island Discs (choose 8 fave records + explain life/choices) a couple of years back. I taped it (and mastered it to CD-R) but it was dull. I didn't even keep a copy. He chose 1 VU track - What Goes On (IIRC) from the '93 live alb - put it down to inept research or weird sense of humour.

Ton of his own stuff of course ,velvets,
nico, cale, moe & laurie anderson.
Also remember dylan, neil young,
jimmy hendrix, ornette coleman.

It was Some Kinda Love from the '93 album

Cale has a pretty cool keyboard part at the end of that version
"Sterling's my favorite guitar player". (-Maureen Tucker, 1990)
