Where was Squeeze recorded?

Post by allthispaperwork »

Anyone know anything more than "London, England" that you sometimes see?

Studio name? Address?

Thanks!

I don't think it's known? Ian Paice doesn't even remember recording it, let alone which studio

Doug one told me it was a large, modern studio in Piccadilly. This makes it very likely that it would be Command Studios - which was also notable for being able to book downtime at short notice.

Squeeze was done immediately after the Doug/Walter/Willie/Maureen European tour, which would put it around November 1971. What's always intrigued me is that this was just before Lou started work on his solo debut accross town at Morgan Studios. I love the idea that he and Doug could conceivably have bumped into each other on the tube.

Having just watched a doc on Deep Purple's Machine Head, I got more interested in pinning down the Ian Paice thing.
Paice says he doesn't remember recording it and that it doesn't even sound like him playing

DP afficionados seem to think that some of the fills give it away, and that it *is* him, just not playing in his usual DP full pelt mode

The VU European Tour ended on 21st November in Amsterdam - after which the rest of the band went home to the US. Doug must have travelled to London instead

Deep Purple were supposed to be on tour in the US from 22nd October until 24th November but Ian Gillan go hepatitis and the dates were cancelled after the first couple of shows. Which puts Paice back in the UK during November twiddling his thumbs

DP were then in Montreux, Switzerland recording Machine Head between 6th and 21st December 1971. Given Gillan's illness and the fact they hadn't played together since October, you'd expect that they did some rehearsals before they went out to record their album

So if indeed it is Ian Paice on Squeeze (and it would be a bizarre thing for DY to misremember given that DP were pretty well known by this stage) then the window for the recording session with Doug would be pretty small. Most likely somewhere between 22nd and 28th November 1971

Probably the biggest unknown is how on earth Sesnick got Paice involved in the first place

Good research!

It's quite conceivable he put all the drum tracks down in a day or two, people recorded pretty quickly in those days.

Who knows how Paice might have come on board. Maybe someone at the studio just happened to have his number.

That would make sense, considering that Paice wouldn't be cheap, and that Doug describes the drum tracks being done by teaching him the songs as they went

Hmmm - although Command is a good shout, how about De Lane Lea - as that is only a short walk from Piccadilly and that is where DP had recorded Fireball earlier in 1971?

Interesting... I can't seem to lay my hands on the email anymore (it was 15+ years ago) but I seem to remember he was quite clear that the studio was specifically on Piccadilly.

That would certainly make it the more obvious candidate - and this page clearly lists Deep Purple as having also recorded at Command, but frustratingly I have yet to identify when and what they recorded there.

With no name producer in the credits, it's likely they just used the house engineer, which would likely have been Andy Hendriksen

He recorded most of the known sessions at Command around then - King Crimson's Islands was in October 1971
Sadly looks like the Roxy Music fans have drawn a blank there too
