Half-speed mastered vinyl now emerging

Post by iaredatsun »

After a clutch of weird 'only-in-greece' half-speed Abbey Road masters of a year or two back that everyone was so suspicious about, these pressings (all three MGM/Verve albums) are now due out later in October :

Here's the WLWH one on UMG site

Boy they never stop! I have been storing my whole Lou/VU collection for the past 7 years in 3rd floor climate controlled storage because I’m terrified of hurricanes! I was rescued once and I am getting ready to let Mike Kostek sell most of my collection. The last thing I want to do is add new remastered items after I have already done this with each new and improved release. I’ve collected for over 50 years and it is now time to pass the baton. That will help me move away from Louisiana after flooding twice in 9 years I must leave my beloved state because climate change will eventually cover it in water. I’m tired of anxiety 6 months of every year. Frustrating for sure. Keep watching cause some goodies will be hitting the pipeline soon.

velvetfan, very sorry to hear about your woes. It must be hard to part with all that stuff. I hope the sale and the move goes well, and finds you in a more secure environment. Good luck!

Coming back to the Abbey Road cuts, I bought the WLWH and the cut and pressing was excellent. Rather thin card on the cover but can't have everything. I imagine that the VU&N and 3rd labums will benefit more than WLWH, too.

I think the ones on Discogs are 2019. I read other reports on ‘3rd’ from 2019 that was also negative. Who knows what those pressings were as they were only for sale from someone in Greece. The two I bought - vu&n and wlwh - are what i would describe as excellent in both cut and pressing.

Maybe a factor is that UMG switched from the GZ pressing plant to one in Holland. That could explain it.

Dont take my sole word for the quality of these. Suggest people wait to hear more feedback on these 2021 pressings.

Look the same. Hand-written. There’s also a hand-written ‘V+‘ on one side and a ‘V=‘ on the other. No sign of a mark indicating plant that I can see. But definitely no ‘gz’ stamp in the runout.

I can't vouch for the guy's specific opinion, but I generally agree with him, and he is a big fan.

Not sure what to think about this guy. He manages to waffle on for ten minutes and say very little about the sound. It’s all empty rhetoric. He compares mono pressings with stereo pressings and clearly has no other stereo pressings to compare the new ones with. How people compare him with Michael Fremer is beyond me.

I’d rather hear valid criticism from people who know what they are talking about with these albums, and who know how explain what their criticisms actually are.
