"The establishment caught up with us at last"

Post by Sheila Klein »

Who knew? In 2017 the VU were granted a Lifetime Achievement Grammy award, which was accepted at the ceremony by John Cale, Maureen Tucker and Martha Morrison. Cale (wearing his manskirt) and his band, with Moe playing percussion, then performed "Sunday Morning" and "I'm Waiting For The Man."

Even further under the radar, in 2008 the Banana album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, "to honor recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance.": https://www.grammy.com/grammys/awards/hall-of-fame#v

While looking into all this I also learned that in 2010 Cale was made an OBE: https://www.nme.com/news/music/john-cale-4-1292117

It's kind of the opposite of what they set out to do all those years ago, but, as Cale so aptly said in his Lifetime Grammy acceptance speech, "the establishment caught up with us at last."

Incredible to see Maureen on stage again. Even with just that tambourine she somehow seems to exude that signature incessant rhythm !
"Sterling's my favorite guitar player". (-Maureen Tucker, 1990)
