The songs for the 2nd Cotillion album...

Post by analogdemon »

Hey Everyone,

Does anyone know what songs were written for the second Cotillion album, if any? And were any of the tunes that ended up on Squeeze intended for that second album? I remember seeing somewhere that at least one or two of the Squeeze tunes were demoed while Sterling was still in the band...

Thanks!

Friends and She'll Make You Cry were demoed by the Yule/Morrison/Powers/Tucker version of the band in autumn 1970, but I don't think there were ever any serious plans for a second studio album with Cotillion/Atlantic. It seems like the label (perhaps understandably) lost interest in the Velvets when Lou left and Loaded didn't sell. Brigid Polk sold the Max's tape to them pretty soon after that, which offered them an easier way of filling the band's two-album contract than ploughing money into a Yule-led album.

It'd have been interesting to see what would have happened if Lou stayed in the band though - maybe they'd have made another album and worked up some of the songs that were already kicking around at the time of Loaded:

Ride Into The Sun
Sad Song
Walk And Talk It
Here Come The Waves / Ocean
Oh Gin
Love Makes You Feel Ten Feet Tall
Wild Child
It's Just Too Much
I Love You
I'm Sticking With You

And maybe one or two Yule songs thrown in if Lou was feeling generous. Might not have been too bad an album, especially with Moe back on board.

"Friends" and "She'll Make You Cry" are likely candidates, I agree, along with "Dopey Joe". As for the Willie Alexander songs, if I understand him correctly, "Spare Change" and "Pretty Tree Climber" were new songs at the time, so they could well have ended up on the new album...
