Another question about the VU & Nico

Post by Kill Mick »

OK, we seem to now have a pretty good idea about the recording sessions for the first album - 10 tracks (I'm including There She Goes Again as I assume it was recorded here and just left off the acetate for some reason) in April 66, 3 re-recorded in May, Sunday Morning in November.

But when were the tracks 'edited and remixed'? And was this the same time as the stereo mix?

My guess is the mono tracks were 'edited and remixed' in May/June 66, i.e. before the ATP single. We now know from the acetate tracks that this was fairly significant, using different vocal tracks etc. However, the slipcase for the 'VU & Nico' disc in PSAS shows the box for a master tape dated 26 Oct 66 (Sunday Morning was added in hand, presumably later, which ties in with the Nov recording). This box clearly also states the master tape is in stereo. So was the stereo version maybe not mixed down until October? Or were both versions done then?

Any ideas?

The Oct '66 date would refer to when the final master tape was assembled from the individual mixes of tracks. The actual mixing would have been done earlier - maybe as early as May, maybe as late as mid-October. Who knows!
