WGO Tapes

Post by Kill Mick »

Apologies if I'm showing my lack of knowledge here, but on Olivier's excellent site many of the gigs have footnotes stating "tapes listed in WGO 1&2". What exactly are these?

I'm assuming they were a list of live tapes, obviously, but do they circulate? Are they known to exist, or are some just rumours? Has anybody heard any of the juicier ones, such as John's last gig with the band in 1968?

And the mosy important question of all, how can we get our hands on them?!

WGO refers to the fanzine "What Goes On"
from the velvet underground appreciation society.
Those tapes were listed in issues 1 & 2.

- that is, readers of the mag wrote in claiming to have them, but if they really did, no 'new' tapes have surfaced for a long time.

If Olivier lists the tracks, there's a tape or a bootleg. No track list = no tape. There are some pretty hard core people around here - if they (or Olivier) haven't got it or at least heard of it, then it's lost, or the date/venue written on those ancient tapes was wrong....

Hi, this topic has been discussed before in a thread and i think the general outcome was that there are probably very few 'lost' tapes out there..but if they haven't surfaced they are thought to be destroyed or mis-labelled. As stated believe Oliviers gig pages cos they are the most up to date detailed listings. The WGO list (which I have a scan of if anyone wants) does indeed look amazing but very very few new recordings have turned up in the last 10 yrs..
