Lou Top 100 Songs

Post by Pernod time »

The other night I went to an excellent "No Wave" evening at a club called Helsinki here in Zürich, where little seen (but fantastic) NYC movies such as "Downtown 81" and "Liquid Sky" were shown, what was interesting is that the club have a jukebox on the wall with 50 favourite CD's voted by the band Sonic Youth. To cut a long story short, the boss of this club told me that Lou Reed has also submitted a list of his 100 favourite songs to the club for a future retrospective. Apparently Lou misunderstood the requirement, but the guy from the club thinks its a great idea anyway. I dont know the list but will be sure to post it when I see it.

Good man! THAT is something I think we'd all like to see.

You know, in 1965 John Lennon got a jukebox and stocked it with his favorite songs. The Beatles took it with them on tour that year, and recently, those songs have all been compiled on a 2 disc set called "John Lennon's Jukebox." It occurs to me that Lou would be a fantastic candidate for similar treatment. Maybe if we can get a look at this list, we could all pool our musical resources together and put together our own "Lou Reed's Jukebox." I don't mean we try to track down all 100 tunes, but I bet we could put together a really nice, thoroughly enjoyable double set.
"For one human being to love another: that is perhaps the most difficult of all our tasks; the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation." - Rainer Maria Rilke

Wow - that be the Cool!

My #1 Lou Reed solo song is "Perfect Day". I've heard two versions of it, both just gor-gee-uss.

There something about the Helsinki jukebox on the Sonic Youth website. Apparently the next round will be dedicated to Alan Lomax. I'm sure some of Lou's favourites would be similar to the records on both of these lists

Nice of him to include tracks by Maureen Tucker and Laurie Anderson. Sadly, no John Cale songs though

And a bit of poetic licence with the "singles" concept, no way was "Lonely Woman" by Ornette Coleman, brilliant as it is, a single...

Thanks for posting this, I didnt get down to the Helsinki bar the last few weeks, so I missed it. To be honest i'm disappointed with Lou's list, everyone likes the songs of their youth, but didnt he listen to any new records that came out in the last 25 years? There have been one or two good ones :D , I suppose it explains the poor quality of his own records in recent years, if he's not inspired by the music thats happening now, but chooses to remain in the past.
