V.U. Promo Tape

Post by dsulpy »

For ?V.U.,? the notes on Olivier?s site for the ?V.U.? album say:

?Some copies have a gold promo sticker on back cover. Pre-release cassette sent to radio stations contained what was to be the original version of the album, with different mixes and with Ferryboat Bill in place of Ocean (version different from the Another View one).?

..... is this circulating?

I have been looking for this bloody cassette for about 10 years and never seen one for sale or circulating on tape lists. There are dozens of promo LPs that come up for sale but never the tape. But the precise information suggests that it does exist..

guys, I have this tape. I obtained it from Mike Kostek many years ago. To be honest I've not listened to it in years. Last year, some kind soul (sorry I've forgotten your name) transferred it to CDR for me. If someone will do the donkey work of copying/distributing it, I'll be happy to send him/her my CDR.
Who's willing to take that on?

Hi Gordon,

I'll happily do it. I'll PM my address to you in case you've lost it.

How do the mixes on the promo compare to the released mixes?

to be honest, I dont think I ever noticed the difference, but I didn't sit down and compare them one to the other. They didn't sound different to me, but I had been used to hearing these songs either on the "foggy notion" ep or my "22 demos" tape (which was on a 1984 TDK ferric C90....) - hardly hi-fi sources to begin with, so I was just glad that stuff was out officially at all! It'll be interesting to hear what others think.

Hi, that was me that did the CDR transfer!

The one difference that I noticed was the fade-out on She's My Best Friend, which has the full 'screaming' section as on the 22 Demos tape. Haven't done a proper comparison with the official versions other than that, but I suspect there will be other small differences.

For what it's worth I don't think the version of Ferryboat Bill is significantly different.

Well, if some kind soul could get it into my hands, I'd be happy to go over it, notate whatever differences are there and report back (he says hopefully...) :-)

Yeah, the tracks that are reverbed on VU (basically I Can't Stand It and Lisa Says, I think?) are the same on here.
