Lost 1969 photos....found!

Post by jimjim »

Well, first new post in a while....hello all.

Been surfing the MOJO forum website today and, woah, was I suprised. One of the regulars there has discovered a old high school year book that his mom owned & it features..., yes, the VU! Apparently, they played a date at her school sometime in 1969 and the resident photographer snapped them for this very book.

Here's a link to the forum's topic which has the links to the scanned photos..

And here's one of the pics...

Unfortunately, my office has firewalled any 'Entertainment' sites so I can't check Olivier's pages to see when & where this was...the guy himself hasn't a clue when it was and he hasn't replied to my PM about where. But as far as I can recall from the VU Web Page, the VU rarely (or never) played High School gigs...could this be a previously undocumented show? At the very least these are 'new' pics to us VU fans...the sight of a bored Moe, Doug & Lou and an excited looking Sterl (!!!) amidst the teachers is priceless!
  :D

No mention on Olivier's page of any school or college dates in 1969. Amazing stuff.

Wow, Jimjim you did it very well!

We should contact this guy "Conrad4" as was "his mom´s university".
The article mentions the VU & the USC Band performing at this auditorium, and that could be the "University of Southern California Band" and that could be the place.

The pic is not good but I would say that Lou is wearing the same shirt that in the 3RD album promo shoots (he one used in color for the cover of Feed back book) so it should be 1968 and not 1969. Lou used this shirt also at the Boston Tea Party Dec 68 or a similar one at least.

I have to leave for the day, but some of you can do some research

i agree with alfredovu. It seems to be '68 rather than '69 because of Lou's shirt . it's the same that he's wearing on the famous L.A. shots while recording the third album
And Moe's got short hair!!

This is what Conrad4 told me:

QUOTE
Hey!
Yeah, they are from Beverley Hills High School from the 1968-1969 year. They were voted in by the student body to perform as the musical guest of choice my mother told me. It wasn?t the normal high school dance thing for a band as I believe the whole school (or at least a large part of it) saw them perform as part of a mandatory assembly, if you can believe that. The assembly auditorium was mentioned as being rebuilt for the first semester in the book.
This was the actual caption near the bottom of the page
?During the first semester, we saw only a few assemblies due to the
contruction in the auditorium. But once the work was completed, we
enjoyed the work of the Velvet Underground and USC band for music, a
nutrition expert, Hakim Jamal, and James Baldwin as speakers, and for
the first time in many years, an interesting and enjoyable Welfare
Assembly?
So from early-1969 I?m guessing
My mother was only fourteen as the time and said she had never seen a more graphic group in here life at that point (her exact quote was ?they sang about pornography...and oral sex?), and I can only assume the song she?s referring to was Sister Ray. I?ll see what else I can get by asking her about it some more.
UNQUOTE

We will see what else he and his mother can bring!
