Songs For 'Drella

Post by dsulpy »

Forgive me if I've raised this before - but I'm wondering what kind of "Songs For 'Drella" sources are out there.

I attended the second St. Ann's performance, and thought it was great. Unfortunately, by the time the BAM performances took place the next year, either Reed or Cale (or both) had managed to ruin virtually everything that was great about it - the lyrics were changed, the horrible "Dream" was added, "Faces and Names" was radically reworked, and... oh, yeah.. Lou Reed forgot how to sing.

Since that time, I've been on a quest to find decent tapes of one (or both) of the original St. Ann's performances. I have about 4/5th of the 1st show in VG stereo, and both shows in G mono (all audience tapes) - but I'm wondering if there's something better floating around out there among you collectors.

I know a wonderful soundboard eventually surfaced from the later St. Ann's performance by Richard Thompson / David Byrne, so I guess there's always hope a great sounding St. Ann's "Drella" will surface someday... :-)
