A little off-topic, but what is a "google alert?" I know they are always rolling out some new way of tracking something or other...velvetfan wrote:small world. It's my google "alert" not search.

Velvetfan, wasn't this the same show that saw the sheriff come on stage and escort Lou off stage after Lou brandished a syringe?velvetfan wrote:I have great b&w shots from his 1974 Chalmette, La. show. Up close. I was looking for tracks etc. but didn't see anything and I was as close as you can get; hanging at the barricade with a telephoto lens. He either had it healed by 11/8/74 or he had make-up covering it up. I was right up front and he did get escorted off stage for a minute but I didn't notice a syringe. I was looking because of the iconic picture from Rolling Stone with Lou and his "fit". I think if he had had a syringe the St Bernard cop would never have let him go free. First in Louisiana, possession of a syringe without a prescription is illegal, and St Bernard cops are some of the most barbaric around. When you think redneck, picture St Bernard cops. There is always the possibility of a payoff by a promoter; think corruption, picture same St Bernard cop again.gibson343 wrote:Velvetfan, wasn't this the same show that saw the sheriff come on stage and escort Lou off stage after Lou brandished a syringe?velvetfan wrote:I have great b&w shots from his 1974 Chalmette, La. show. A Google alert allows you to sign up for a daily alert with either a topic or a name. I have a daily alert under Lou Reed and one for Velvet Underground. I get a daily email each with links to news stories and blogs with the chosen terms. It comes in very handy and I have been notified many times of things I would have missed otherwise. Of course you also get links to other things such as who is playing at "Velvet Undergrounds club Singapore" or stories about the British soccer player named Lou Reed.MJG196 wrote:A little off-topic, but what is a "google alert?" OK I think I might have solved this mystery and my gut feeling was wrong!
In Lester Bangs famous article ?Dead Lie The Velvet Underground RIP? in Creem Magazine May 1971 there are our pictures and credited to Leee Black Childers. There is also another article from Feb 71 which looks like another of these pics.
Looking at early gig lists for Lou he didn?t play any gigs in 1971 infact he didn?t play in public until the Bataclan concert in Jan 72. So if he didn?t play in public after Aug 70 and early 71 these must be VU pics and in that case as Leee was based in NYC they are probably from Maxs.
Can I just add that Alfredos book was invaluable for solving this - i'm sure it will be vital for settling VU arguments/discussions for many yrs to come.

Hey Bleach, I gotta disagree. Two data-points to examine:bleach wrote:OK I think I might have solved this mystery and my gut feeling was wrong!
1. Lou's shirt. In the color shots you can see that the sleeves end in cuffs (perhaps a long-sleeved shirt pushed up?), but in the Leee pics it appears to be a regular t-shirt.
2. The mic. Different microphones.
EDIT: I should point out that I 100% agree the color shots are VU pics.

Good work. Note that Leee was not merely "based in NYC" but was virtually house photographer at Max's specifically, which further supports your case.Looking at early gig lists for Lou he didn?t play any gigs in 1971 infact he didn?t play in public until the Bataclan concert in Jan 72. So if he didn?t play in public after Aug 70 and early 71 these must be VU pics and in that case as Leee was based in NYC they are probably from Max's.
As you note, the only live performance Lou did after Max's in summer 1970 was Bataclan in Jan. '72, prior to his shows with The Tots later that year. But his look by then was quite different than before, and at Bataclan he was seated. Those facts seem to further rule out the chance of the color pics being from anywhere other than Max's '70, and thus with VU.
If it leaves us unable to argue anymore, then I'm against it!Can I just add that Alfredo's book was invaluable for solving this - i'm sure it will be vital for settling VU arguments/discussions for many yrs to come
