01. Interview

This is a curious little piece of history from the time Nico visited far-off New Zealand in early 1986 with her band 'The Faction'. This interview was conducted by journalist Keith Tannick sometime during her stay in February. It was broadcast in March 1986. At the time RWP was broadcast on the nascent FM innovation in NZ as a simulcast on the student university network around NZ. So this was recorded on a small ghetto blaster, not a great quality one hence the background noise. This has never been circulated until now, some 25 years later.

Nico and the Faction played 4 shows on that tour, they were...

1986-02-22 His Majesty's Theatre, Auckland
1986-02-23 - St James Theatre, Wellington
1986-02-24 - Carlton Hotel, Christchurch
1986-02-25 - Dunedin (no venue is listed, but it may have been Sammy's Cabaret)

Enjoy!

I posted this in the thread on Dime:

I gotta say that her band was NOT called the Faction. Yes, it said that on the album cover, but there's a whole story behind that, found in James Young's book, "The End." He played keyboards in tha band.

"Nico came up with a title for the album, Camera Obscura. Demetrius and I smuggled a name for the group on the cover. 'Something small,' he'd suggested. [John Cooper] Clarke and Echo came up with 'The Faction.' Nondescript, diminutive, That's how Nico liked us."

When she saw the sleeve she freaked.

" 'Who's this fucking Faction?' She made it sound like Fucktion."
