Doubt with "November 1,1965 Filmmakers Cinematheque, NY

Post by taxine »

I got a mess with this show date, according with Olivier web this performance was on above date at NY old cinematheque at Lafayette st. and cosisted in:

.New Cinema Festival I - Opening Night
.Rites of the Dream Weapon - I - "The Tremor Rite"

The matter comes when check this flyer out date(right corner up),might be and a jerky thing, but this "Rites of the Dream Weapon....."claims that was from 2 to 7 november ??

Do you think on a diferent performance, any clue to clean up my foggy mind.....??
But there are no stars in New York sky, they're all on the ground.

Here's a little more info for you:
That flyer is an original Angus manuscript, a draft for
an event handbill utilizing an earlier event handbill, the May 1965
Dreamweapon performance which is super-significant as it lists the
Velvets as performers, thereby being their first show - until something else comes up of course.

 Sal, do you mean it uses the name 'Velvet Underground' in May, 65?! Or does it refer to them under another name?

Where is that, I'm not seeing their name on there?

The way I read what Sal is saying is that the handbill uses the design of an earlier handbill that was for the May gig at which the proto-VU with Maclise played. But, as they didn't have a name then, they would not be mentioned on that May handbill. We know from Cale that they didn't use the VU name until later, in the summer of '65. Also Unterberger supports this by saying that they played anonymously at this time ? at those film-screening events.

Is there a date on the handbill for the May performance? This very much suggests that it was 14 May 1965...

Maybe, but I've only ever seen the first VU appearance mentioned as "Launching of the Dreamweapon", never "Establishment of the Dreamweapon".
