I sort of hinted at this question in another topic, but I feel it's worthy of it's own topic.
I know Simonm has at least 2 peelable bananas (one with a sticker over emerson, and an import) but I was wondering how many other members here had bananas and where they got them - how much they paid etc.
Sadly my bananas don't peel - but I've got one signed by Moe!!

Unfortunately I do not have any peelable bananas on vinyl. I only have a Verve 180gr Reissue. At least I own the MFSL Gold disc CD. The best sounding source, as far as it concerns the stereo mix....
I tried to bid on a mono (peelable) edition several times, but they all went way too expensive for me....
The only banana that peels is the one on the "Peel Slowly And See" boxset. And I own a bootleg CD of the mono mix (digpak). This one also peels....
I´m waiting... When I´m older and have lots of money, I´ll buy me a V5008!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When I see ebay auctions like:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... tegory=306
i am tempted to buy these and re-sticker them with one of my reissue bananas. And this is exactly what makes me afraid of bidding on an unpeeled VU5008. I alway doubt the shape of the banana................

hmmm. banana paranoia.
but I know what you mean - there are some that turn up on ebay in remarkably good condition - makes you wonder whether it's the real thing
I was thinking about bidding on a slightly lesser condition one - maybe with a bit of the banana missing - at least you'll know it's the genuine article! (probably a bit cheaper too)

"I was thinking about bidding on a slightly lesser condition one - maybe with a bit of the banana missing"
I started off with a 'peeled', just to get the record in mono - got one in playable fair-to-good condition for £12, at Rhythm Recs in Camden. Happy day! couldn't believe it. I like the pink peeled banana too.
It did get me to thinking about trying to get someone to screenprint some repro bananas for all the peeled albs in the world to be covered again, but I didn't get very far with that thought. I haven't seen any fake bananas knocking around.

$1,575.00
Is this some kind of record? (no pun intended)
Seems an awful lot of money to me - I've started saving!!

Yikes - $1.6 K! - I think that's the most I've seen it go for.
If you look at ebay VU auctions and you see this "recosukekun" character bidding you might as well give up as they win *everything* they bid on! I don'y know who it is, but I know they've got money. The strange thing about a sealed record is that it will probably never be played as opening that seal would at least halve it's value.

i wish i could compete with him........

Bananas memories
Collecting is nice. Kind of obssession. Early VU items have the charm of Warhol aurea. You buy a piece of pure Pop/Sixties Culture.
I started buying VU records at 17. Those days (1981) my only obssession was music: vynil & tapes were only options those days and a few bucks per month to spend my biggest problem.
At one point, your collection grow. You have everything available (VU is not a big task, you are not talking about Beatles, Rollings etc) and then NEED to have one of those peelable bananas you have seen on the UPTIGHT book. Big mistake: you are cought for ever!!
I bought my first peelable banana in Syracuse (USA). I was driven back to New York from Canada and stopped by there for dinner. Found a Record Shop on a corner and found a So-So but full peelable banana Stereo No Emerson. Paid $50. Cheapest in my city -Madrid (Spain)- those days for this record was $120, so it made may day. Since that i have bought a few more peelables at VUAS, Barcelona Record fair and Plastic Passion in London (Bill Allerton Record Shop-best place in the World for VU collectors - well, this was before Ebay...)
I would say that my treasure is the White Label Promo Japanesse 1st pressing. I have never seen another one offered.
Ebay has dropped prices and helped collectors a lot to find rare stuff. Sometimes you are lucky and win items at increadible low prices. I got my Aspen (Full and Mint+ inside, box is just VG-) for just $240, when I paid $250 for "Loop"in New York´s House of Oldies back 1995. I swapped "Loop" for a Yellow Label Mono WL/WH with a good friend of mine.
I told you before. Collecting is nice. You made good friends all around the world and have a lot of fun. Only problem is money...
