Yeah, I got that notice from Sundazed as well.

Guess I'll have to do battle with the unwashed masses on Record Store Day if I want a copy.
It is wholly unnecessary but its still nice to add something to the collection.

The Sundazed single came into a local record shop that I frequent last week. The guy who owns it showed me seven copies he has got. I know its against the spirit of 'record store day' (whatever that spirit is) but I asked him if he would kindly set one aside for me.... which he has done god bless him. I probably could have taken it then and there but I didn't want to hassle the guy. To be honest - its got a nice pic sleeve but I don't think the the audio is anything new. Its an edit anyway.

I'm not a fan of record store day.... last year this same little shop got ONE copy of the Blur 7" while a rival shop just down the road got nearly 50. What's that about? In my opinion its all a scam and a way for some record dealers and speculators to put rare items immediately onto ebay and make big buckeroos at the expense of real fans. Sorry if that's all a bit negative but I've got lots more stories about Record Store Day and none of them are good.

There are about 30 of these up on eBay today, ranging from .99cents up to $34.99 Buy It Now. Looks like the suggestion that "its all a scam and a way for some record dealers and speculators to put rare items immediately onto ebay and make big buckeroos at the expense of real fans" by Bradski may have been correct.

I completely disagree with that assessment. RSD's goal is to get people into independent record stores. In-store performances and signings happen all over the place. In 2010, Vinyl had its biggest year since 1991 (more than 2.8 million sales) and record companies have found a new way to make money in the new vinyl economy - limited edition pressings. They are priced VERY fairly (most 7" singles were $10) and are usually limited to 1 copy per customer. That's sort of an unofficial rule and its up to the store to enforce it.

How is it a scam? Putting out limited edition vinyl that people want to buy? Sounds like supply/demand to me. Just because some people hoard and post 'em on ePay doesn't mean the whole idea of RSD is a scam.

I agree MJG, it's like ticket scalping, the tix are not produced to gouge the buyer; the scalper, or, "ticket agency" buys up a bunch and sells them for a profit. The same goes with the Sundazed 45. I was able to procure a couple of copies because the record dealer I bought them from is a friend. I sold him a sealed banana lp 30 years ago and we have remained friends since. He had a limited number that Sundazed would sell him and we have done business over the years, both buy and sell. So, I was fortunate. Still, Sundazed is not making much on them, the ones selling them on eBay are. That is totally out of Sundazed's control and is not their end goal.

I wasn't really suggesting it's the record companies that are scamming.... I said it was dealers and speculators...... but I do think that the organisation of RSD is highly suspect. There is a hierarchy of shops..... if you are 'in' with them then you can order what you want. If you aren't then you either get one copy or no copies at all of the biggest in-demand items. What I'm saying is they don't distribute the records fairly. The Kate Bush was one such item this year.... some shops got none, the shop I know got ONE while others got plenty.

I'm torn between supporting record day and hating it. On the one hand it celebrates a type of retailing which is all too rare in the 21st century. It's just unfortunate that to get people's interest the record companies have to bring out limited edition stuff which the majority of fans won't be able to get hold of. The first people through the doors of shops on the day will be with a friend or two (or three) and literally clean up, each buying a copy of everything they know will be in demand. I know for a certain fact that gangs of tout types were working in teams through the records shops in the town I live in. I heard them on their mobiles planning the attack.
RSD is like issuing a years worth of new releases on one day. Why not spread it about a bit more and keep the interest going through the year?
It appeals to a base type of human creature.... if I printed 5 pound notes in the morning that magically transformed into 20 pound notes by the evening then its no surprise that they would be in demand. Its not about the music with the tout types.

Makes my point perfectly. You've got 2 copies - therefore depriving another VU fan of a chance of getting a copy. Why do you need 2? One to keep and one to sell? :D

I lucked out. The ones on eBay are going between $17.00 and $25.00. I bid $6.00 on a low opening bid item with $6.00 s&h, but For some reason, no one else bid so I got it for $1.00 plus $6.00 s&h! It was so cheap that I donated $1.00 for animal rights. good day :D :D :D

FYI, I started a RSD thread in the General Discussion section. Let's not muddy up this thread's waters...
