Rare, Rarest and Most Expensive VU items
Re: Rare, Rarest and Most Expensive VU items
I can imagine anyone who bought them when they were first discovered back in the eighties and treated them as novelties will be feeling a bit annoyed now.simonm wrote:$945 for the banana!

...or if they bought 12 might feel like they were just on an episode of "Antiques Roadshow" in the USA...

Damn! I found a roll of 12 of them in NY back in 1990 in Venus records & I used through the years to fill unpeeled vg copies. I kept one by the way...

That Hasil ADkins put me in the mood for some peanut butter rock. You
know the King of rock and roll loved peanut butter and banana sandwiches, fried!

That Charlie Feathers record recalls a trip my friend George and I took to Memphis in the early 80's. George was a one handed rockabilly guitarist and my best friend. The story is long but to hit the highlights: We drove from N.O. totally loaded and drunk; we made a doctor in Mississippi for a bottle of tussinex cough syrup; we found Paul Burlison in Wall, MS (G. read in Creem that he drove a school bus in Walls, MS) and had tea and cookies with him and his wife. George jammed with him on "Train kept a rollin'" and Paul said George was better than Clapton on that song; even with only 2 numbs on his strumming hand! We also met LA Times music critic Robert Hilburn, who was there to interview Paul from his days with the Johnny Burnett Trio. The article actually mentioned "2 Ramones t-shirt clad punk rockers" making a pilgrimage to his home. We also hunted down good old Charlie Feathers in Memphis in some little white-trash suburb, and again George talked our way into Charlies house for an impromptu jam. We left with a handful of autographed 45's and Charlie thrilled that young kids knew who he was. We then made a stop at Graceland and were tossed out of there and a couple souvenir stores for Georges rude Elvis comments. I believe he asked if areas of Graceland were roped off because all the syringes weren't cleaned up yet, and the last straw was, when seeing a mirrored wall, G. asked if this was where Elvis peeked through at Ann Margret on the crapper. This was right after Albert Goldman's Elvis book had riled so many feathers. We were threatened with bodily harm in a souvenir store when G. was caught bending the Elvis spoons, and asking for an Elvis pillow with all the drugs found in his autopsy embroidered on the pillowtop. We were in contact with a former girlfriend the whole weekend (yes 1 weekend!) as to our exploits, and we arrived home about 4am Monday, to find a painted banner strung across my porch written in "Steadman" script "Welcome back from your savage journey to the heart of the rockabilly dream!" Needless to say, this small bit of the entire adventure, (which included being ripped off for drugs on Beale Street, chasing down the thief and recovering our funds with an air pistol, hiding our rental car in an alley, catching crabs from a shitty hotel bed, and so on,) leads to thoughts of a possible book detailing the whole mischievous trip. Or at least a good blog entry.
