RIP Jamie. I'll put on some Mirrors in your honor.
I think probably the only way we'd hear them in our lifetimes, is if they fall into the hands of someone who'd risk putting them out privately.

RIP, Klimek.
What risk is there?

the risk of putting out a bootleg?

Realistically | think we have to forget about the Klimek tapes, anyone he trusted with them would probably want to respect his wishes.
UMG has the La Cave Oct '68 What Goes On, so presumably they have the whole show - there's a chance that might come out sometime, but as others have pointed out, there hasn't been any new VU stuff released since Lou's death and Cale isn't interested. Early VU would be the logical next step on from the Pickwick stuff, maybe a vinyl release for the 1966 Factory tapes will be next?

The Matrix tapes and the show from Second Fret on the Loaded deluxe box set came out after Lou passed. Supposedly the WGO in PSAS is taken from the boot which would mean UMG doesn't have the tape (but who knows? Not me).

Guessing Klimek's best stuff is already out (SSR and Live 68), but still hoping for more. It was pretty obvious he was never going to change his mind, but if the tapes end up with someone who values the joy they would bring to a bunch of enthusiasts more than his friend's bitterness there's a possibility. Probably now or never though.

What was the bitterness about? I've heard he was supposed to have more tapes but never knew why he didn't release them.

He was pissed about not getting any money from the bootlegs. My impression is that he had an agreement with the bootleggers, but they never gave him his promised share (but could be they just got the tapes from someone else and released it without him playing a part)

Highly alternative theory: Lou was pissed at Klimek for not giving him any writing credits for the Mirrors song Hands in my pocket (which is clearly based on Guess I'm Falling in Love), so he instructed UMG not to pay Klimek anything for his tapes and not release them even if they got them for free.

I hardly noticed the Second Fret thing - those are the dullest VU shows ever imo. I had assumed the Matrix rejease was agreed by Lou before his death but i don't remember, but WGO on PSAS is much better quality than the Live 68 boot, no?

Last time the subject of Klimek came up here, we managed to find a few snippets online regarding his tapes. Consensus seemed to be that they still exist but are deteriorating...

I haven't heard the Live 68 boot for a while, due to my turntable being out of action, but my recollection is that it is good quality and that WGO on PSAS could very plausibly have been sourced from it.

Live 68 is great, one of the best boots for sure - but unfortunately 1 semitone too fast.
Really wish someone would put out a speed-corrected version of it.
