details Up-tight - Studs Terkel's TV/radio 1966

Post by mangue »

Morrison [p49, about 1966 Poor Richard's, Chicago]: "... We went on Studs Terkel's TV show, did a couple of radio shows, and all that sort of on-tour stuff."

I searched for Studs Terkel TV and Warhol/EPI/VU, but didn't find any info about such TV appearances; also not mentioned anywhere on Olivier's VU-website.
The only thing I found is a discussion between Studs Terkel and five EPI members [Ingrid, Malanga, Morrissey, Sterling and Sesnick (!)], broadcasted 1966.Jun.23 on radio WFMT.
available to listen at https://studsterkel.wfmt.com/programs/i ... -exploding [incl.full transcript; note: haven't seen this posted here before]

a week later on 1966.Jul.01 Studs Terkel spoke with Marshall McLuhan [no mention of EPI, Warhol, etc, but interesting anyway]; available at https://studsterkel.wfmt.com/programs/m ... cal-topics

Now my questions:
--has anybody ever seen/heard about the TV appearance Sterling mentioned?
--are there more radio appearances [1966.Jun in Chicago] than the one linked above?
--is there an original source of Sterling's quote, or is this coming out of interviews especially done for Up-tight?

PS funny that slithery Steve Sesnick had wormed his way into the group as early as summer of 1966

And I'd really like to watch the full film of their appearancw on David Susskins show in early 66. There's a few short clips of it in Todd Hayne's doc.

You might want to research whether Terkel even had a TV show at that time. This could easily be another case of distortion in Sterling's memory of events.

I searched for that and couldn't find anywhere [internet nor old newspapers!] that around 1966 Terkel even had a TV show.
He had a show in the 1950s and later reappeared in the late 1970s and early 1980s on TV. Though he seems to have been connected to some special kind of alternative Chicago TV which might might not have been listed in the newspapers.
So anybody who knows more about this feel free to spread your knowledge about this.

This is a remarkable find! Even better that it's out of the blue -- something we hadn't already known about, unless we count Sterling's red herring of a mention.

The audio here is clearly of a radio program. I think we can dismiss the possibility of Terkel -- who is well out of his ordinary comfort zone here -- conducting both radio and TV interviews with anyone associated with the EPI. Factor in the doubt that Terkel even had a TV program at this time.

Given all that, my belief is that what Sterling recalled as a TV appearance with Terkel was a false memory, and that what he was thinking of was this radio show instead.

Searched some more and think I found the original broadcasting date and time:

Friday 1966.Jun.24 at 10hr [morning!] on WFMT's Wax Museum [with Studs Terkel]
Warhol was announced as Studs Terkel's guest, but it seems instead 5 EPI members turned up in Studs' radio studio.
Don't know if this was broadcasted live or pre-recorded, but if live it explains the not too lively responses by the EPI members...

"Friday FM Picks - Morning 10:00 - WFMT - Wax Museum [next program on WFMT starts at 11:30]
Studs' guests are "pop" artist and underground film Andy Warhol [and Chicago artist and critic Harry Bouras.]"

Furthrmore found that a week earlier Warhol seems to have appeared in an evening program at radio WBBM:

"Saturday AM Choices - Evening 08:00 - WBBM - Jerry Williams [next program on WBBM starts at 11:00]
Guest: Andy Warhol, who brings his "Exploding Plastic Inevitable" to Chicago, discusses pop culture"

On the World Radio History website didn't find any info about above EPI members' or Warhol's radio appearances, but more info [most complete?] about Studs Terkel

*Encyclopedia of Radio - The Museum of Broadcast Communications [2004, Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers]
https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-B ... mplete.pdf

Entry: Terkel, Louis "Studs" 1912--, U.S. Disc Jockey, Commentator, Interviewer, and Author [page 1389-1390; pdf 1454-1455]
...Employed in various radio producing jobs during the 1930s and 1940s. Moved to on-air disc jockey and commentator. Host of Studs' Place on WMAQ television, 1949-50. Jazz columnist for the Chicago Sunday Times. Host of The Studs Terkel Show on WFMT-FM Chicago, 1958-98...

*Encyclopedia of Television - Museum of Broadcast Communications [1997, Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers]
https://worldradiohistory.com/BOOKSHELF ... vision.pdf
... The Museum of Broadcast Communications (MBC) in Chicago works in a similar manner [as Museum of Television and Radio (MTR) in New York City], providing a computerized database, individual viewing arrangements and a staff available for questions or special requests. The MBC collections include extensive materials related to local Chicago programming and the "Chicago School" of television with shows by a.o.Studs Terkel...
--Chicago School of Television
... By 1950 spring the major body of Chicago School work focused on NBC-WNBQ variety offerings, children's shows and highly
rated - low budgeted cowboy film series. For comedy and drama there was Studs Terkel's Studs' Place, Portrait of America, Crisis, and Reported Missing...

My conclusion: Sterling mentioned wrongly a 1966.June TV appearance in Chicago; if his quotes are from interviews specially done for Up-tight, it might be because around that time [early 1980s] Studs Terkel reappeared with a show on TV in Chicago.

Note: Sterling's mentioning of "a couple of radio shows", might be simply rebroadcasts of the WFMT show by other radio stations.
