Candy Says (video and audio combined)

Post by fletchercjohnson »

I was excited by that 30 second clip of new footage in the Todd Haynes documentary and even more excited when I learned that audio existed from that same show! (In the documentary Haynes uses the audio from the studio version of the song.) I just took a little time and combined the audio from the bootlegged concert with the video from the documentary.

https://youtu.be/kVxkWnwcFYw

A few notes:
A) Todd Haynes edited the song in the VU documentary to use the first half of the chorus and then the end of the chorus (skipping the "I want to watch them pass me by..." line). I edited the song from the bootleg to match the Haynes edit so the audio/video would continue to line up
B) The bootlegged audio from the concert is really bad. I took some time to clean it up in Pro Tools but there's only so much I can do

It's insane how excited I am to see Doug's lips move and actually hear the sound coming out of them!

thanks! interesting! i like that early fuzzy b/w video...
how did you get the footage?
i can't say i remember seeing that in the film, but presumably Haynes' researchers got it from Nelson.

how did you get the footage?
I got the video by pointing my iPhone at the TV and recording it off of the documentary (so not very professional at all) but once I learned that audio and video existed from the same concert I just had to see them together!

I'm sure I saw a quote from Steve Nelson a while back where he said he had filmed both Candy Says and Heroin. Unfortunately the extant audio for "Heroin" makes "Candy Says" seem hi fi.......

Is the audio for Heroin worse than the rest? I know it's not on the "After The White Heat" bootleg with the rest of the concert. I have the whole show on a tape from circa 1982 I think. I'll have to have a listen to how Heroin sounds, but I think the tape as a whole is probably more lo-fi than the bootleg, from what I remember.

All I can say is in this emoji..

Since first hearing about the video footage I'd long hoped we'd get a sync up. This is a well-deserved break through. Let's hope we get more.

Well done to all involved.

Is this the first VU footage in properly synced sound & vision since ASOS?

Heroin is a little less horrible than the rest despite the distortion, the hiss, the noises on the microphone and some crowd talk during quiet passages. With the new demix process, it could be even better improved than What Goes On from October 4, 1968 at La Cave on PSAS.
