Guess I'm Falling In Love fake live version?
Re: Guess I'm Falling In Love fake live version?
Another conjecture which I'll throw out there so it can be dismissed: the uploader seems to be heavily into Trump-related right wing political material. Didn't Moe Tucker take a dive in that direction around 2014 as well? Possible connection? Although i think all of Moe's unreleased material has come to us already.

What's the source of this thing about the studio version having a vocal that's lost due to tape damage? How do we know it wasn't just left as a backing track?

A music related comment from Lund Peterson here - and a possible 1967 Cleveland connection?

PS Apparently The Munx opened for the Velvets for at least one show.

I've got another theory. If this really is from the Upbeat broadcast in either January or July of 1967 (which I believe it is), maybe the lyrics were changed intentionally. Perhaps, in 1967, the national American television audience wasn't ready to hear about the "fever" in Lou's pocket!Kill Mick wrote: ↑18 Apr 2021 09:04 On balance I really think this is the Upbeat recording it claims to be, and I think it's from Jan 67. I don't think Reed fluffs the vocals at all, I just think the song is still being worked on and the lyrics haven't been finalised. It doesn't even include the "I got (my) fever" line, and the repetition of the "I got my hands in my pockets" line is typical of an unfinished Lou lyric.
Btw, Dylans 1966 song Absolutely Sweet Marie has the line "I got fever down in my pockets".

It would be great story if so; removing a sexual reference and packing the song with references to speed freaks carrying bennies in their pockets.hkmartin wrote: ↑18 Apr 2021 16:37 I've got another theory. I read it recently. I forget where. It was an interview with Sterling Morrison and at one point he was, in retrospect, talking about the 80s archive releases. They were going to reject Guess I’m Falling In Love due the tape damage on the version they had (the vocal version) . Morrison told them that he knew there was another version without vocals. And so they found the version he referred to and used it.

Sterling Morrison by Thomas Anderson
in Creem, November 1987 issue (page 42)
(...) Likewise, the Velvet Underground were wary of any promotional stunt concocted by their management, which is probably why there were no Miller beer commercials. "We were on Upbeat (a syndicated late '60s rock TV show)," remembers Morrison. "We did a song called 'I Guess I'm Falling In Love.' Terrific song featuring a 'fuzz solo' by yours truly. But we almost never went on those shows because you had to be a pop success - which we never were. I always dreaded the day we might have to be on one. The playing would have been OK, but what if they asked us to do some coomedy?" (Sterling also added that "Guess I'm Falling In Love" turned up without vocals on Another View because the master tape was damaged.) (...)

Thanks Olivier, and nice to see you here.
So there's no direct quote from Sterling about the tape damage then, just paraphrasing by the journalist. Not that it really matters either way, but I still think it might be Chinese whispers. It just seems odd that the rest of the multitrack for that song is in perfectly good shape, but that the vocal would somehow be unusable.

There is. It's what I just described as having been reading recently. He specifically mentions tape damage.Mark wrote: ↑18 Apr 2021 20:00 Thanks Olivier, and nice to see you here.
