11-14-81

Post by Sheila Klein »

I've been listening to a portion of a John Cale set dated November 14, 1981. According to Hans Werkman's site that show took place in New York, at a venue listed alternately on his site as "Stillwend Club" and "Stillwend Clube." I can find no trace of either name as having existed in New York, and wonder whether it was situated somewhere other than there, or that show was in New York, but at a venue of a different name.

That's not the only odd piece of documentation on this show. Werkman lists the show as a band performance, even including the band member's names, but the setlist he gives (which matches the audio fragment that I have) are straight out of Cale's solo repertoire, and the songs I have are solo.

Werkman's site is generally quite accurate, but something doesn't add up here. Clarifying info gratefully received.

That helps a lot, by showing that the venue name as I'd had it was misspelled. Googling the correct spelling, Stillwende, turns up enough hits to show that it was indeed a real place -- brief-lived, best known under its previous name of Tier 3, but real all the same.

Much appreciated!

Ron Schmitt's gigography of Cale is also a useful cross-reference - https://www.schmitt-hall-studios.com/ro ... graphy.htm and features the correct spelling of Stillwende.

Good yarn from walkonvu though, I enjoyed that.

Cale is with a new york band called "Doppler Effect" the honi soit band had broken up, whatever band werksman has written is wrong. Some members of the band went on to form a band called "See No Evil" who released an album on CBS in the late 1980's produced by Richard Robinson. Cale appears on that album playing viola uncredited by he does get a "tip of the hat and thanks to..." credit
