I'm really enjoying the new mix of "I Can't Stand It," though, referring to it as an "unreleased song" is obviously a stretch. http://consequenceofsound.net/2014/11/u ... es-listen/

How bizarre - it sounds like Bowie remixing Raw Power or something. I can't imagine how much more different it could sound to the familiar mix, without adding anything or putting a dance beat over the top.

It?s crazy isn?t it? Hearing it like this makes you realise quite how much of a smoothing out job they did on those tapes for VU!

It sounds as raw and ranshackle as you?d expect the 1969 line-up to sound.

I know they did a real job on Stephanie Says to clear up the off-key vocals and make a pretty song sound as pretty as possible ? so maybe they just got carried away and did the same to the rest of the songs, completely missing the point that a track like I Can?t Stand It is not MEANT to be smooth and pretty

DavidH, I get your point but have to say that, contrary to popular opinion, I think Bowie did a great job on Raw Power. Or is that what you are saying?

hkmartin. Thanks for the link. I'm feeling much more excited by this boxset release after hearing this. I like Lou Reed's backwards counting in the middle of the song.

Yeah, I wasn't saying it was bad, just that it was very different and changed a straight ahead rock song into something else. I also love the original Raw Power. I have to take it back though - this is a much more radical reworking - so much so, if you told me it was a completely different recording, just with the same vocals used, I'd believe you.

David, it's been discussed on the Stooges forum before, but I just really wanted to confront this idea ? that the Carrot Top Bowie fucked it up. Personally, I think that is based on some mistruths probably perpetrated by the Iggy himself. I like the Bowie version ? he took the recordings and made them into an subtler more enduring classic that went outside the limited confines of straight hard rock. I mean to say he enriched it.

I'm not sure if there's something getting lost in the translation here, but we agree. When I said 'original Raw Power', I meant the first release, ie the 'Bowie Mix', as opposed to either the rough mixes, or Iggy's in-the-red-heavy-metal mix. The second half of what I said was me taking back that this remix is comparable to Bowie's reworking of RP - this (ie ICSI) is much more strange and radical.

Sorry David, my fault. 'more strange and radical'. Yes, I'm with you.
