Ten years on from Rosie Lee...

The reason I'm so convinced it was 2004 is because I specifically joined this Forum because of the Rosie Lee thread, that was in May 2004 and from memory about the first 4 or 5 tracks had been posted when I joined. I'll happily take the wetransfer version if it's on offer though, although I completely agree that with recordings of this quality the whole flac vs mp3 debate is largely redundant anyway. And I certainly agree torrent analysis is a complete waste of time, I've always relied on my good old ears to judge these things!
At the time it was released it was claimed that "Dispatches From The Dream Factory" featured better versions than any previously available, but having never heard it I've no idea if that's true.

Mick, I joined around the same time and so it must have been for the same reason. I only remember being around before the first track appeared. I'm just shocked it was that long ago. I presume then the tracks I have are dated 2007 because I duplicated them due to a hardware update or I just downloaded another copy. I burnt the original tracks to Audio CD when I got them, which I do still have.

I also have the Dispatches CD, so I may compare them. Anyway I'll upload the FLACs tonight.

Well Simonm posted MP3s of them on brigipolktapedtheworld in 2005, and from memory I think they were a re-post for some reason - maybe the WAVs he mentioned were earlier?
I guess all this proves is that time flies and we're all getting a lot older a lot quicker than we think, sadly!

No one can log in, cause there is no possibility to put in an alternate eMail adress.

So how come I can still log in to it? And it's not coz I set the account up in the first place, coz I didn't.

I guess it is because of your ip address or because you have an older cookie stored on your machine so that your device is not unknown to yahoo.

My explanation in the Dime torrent explains it all. Well, almost all. The original CD-R I was given with those files came from a very trusted trader, who said that someone at the Warhol Museum with access to the original source snuck a recorder into the place and duped it. The "duper" provided a copy to my trading buddy, who provided me with a copy of that. I trust that my trader source didn't make a lossy copy, so it could be that the original dupe was lossy (minidisc perhaps?). Point is, my Dime files were as good as we're likely to get, though I do appreciate Rosie sharing the groove here.

Thanks MJG, that clears it up. I wonder if the someone at the Warhol Museum actually took an analogue copy of the CD, i.e. on cassette tape, as opposed to a digital copy, i.e. CD-R, and subsequently digitised it? That could explain why Track 7 was incomplete (at about the 30 min mark) as well, if they were flipping the tape over.
Either way, I remain grateful to everyone involved in ripping, copying and sharing some of my favourite VU tracks.

As an aside here's two spectral analyses. Note how the Dispatches from the Dream factory has a line at 15kHz. Apart from that the Dream Factory looks cleaner and the signals at 0-10k look more extended. The FLACs look like a signal has been removed above 13k and then replaced with sparse noise*. Not sure what it all means and in terms of listening, though - but it's clear that there's not much of interest above 10k. I'll post the Dispatches versions later in the week.

*In fact just looking at it again, I wonder if the FLAC version has had the 15k tone removed which could be why it looks so empty above 13k.
