Where is the missing music?

Post by tarbaby2 »

Olivier's site lists the following tapes. Does anyone know what has happened to them? It seems as if there should be a LOT more music out there than what we've been able to get our hands on so far.

1965 ? Film-Maker?s Cinematheque
1965 ? Summit High School (Dec. 11)
1966 ? Fillmore Auditorium (May 27-29)
1966 ? University of West Virginia (Nov. 5)
1966 ? Toronto (Nov. 14)
1967 ? Marwick Theater (April ?)
1967 ? Boston Tea Party (May 26-27)
1967 ? Boston Tea Party (Aug. 24)
1968 ? Montreal (April 19)
1968 ? La Cave (April 26-28)
1968 ? Los Angeles (June 1)
1968 ? Avalon Ballroom (July 19-21)
1968 ? Boston Tea Party (Sept. 27-28 ? last gigs w. John Cale)
1968 ? La Cave (Oct. 26)
1968 ? Whiskey-A-Go-Go (Oct. 14)
1968 ? Whiskey-A-Go-Go (Nov. 14-17)
1968 ? Boston Tea Party (Dec. 14)
1969 ? Boston Tea Party (March 3)*
1969 ? University of Maryland (March 27)
1969 ? Kinetic Playground (April 25-27)
1969 ? Woodrose Ballroom (May 16-17)*
1969 ? Vulcan Gas Company (Oct. 23-25) - tapes probably destroyed
1969 ? The Matrix (Oct. 30-Nov. 1)
1969 ? Retinal Circus (November)**
1970 ? Pal Joey?s (Feb. 28)
1970 ? Max?s Kansas City (Joseph Freeman Tape)
1970 ? Max?s Kansas City (August 26)
1970 ? Max?s Kansas City (August 28)

* this tape may actually be in circulation
** bogus tape of this gig is making the rounds

these are (mostly) the tapes which are listed in What Goes On (Best of 1+2). If I could figure out how to post pictures here I would post the actual page in the magazine which lists them.

Ok that's a thumnail of it. I'll try to post a full size version if someone can tell me how to....

You can see from the context that the authors of that page had probably not heard the ones you list - they are not on the "annotated tape list".

The "Joseph Freeman" Max's tape certainly exists.

I'd like to think that recordings were made at the Fillmore West, and that they are in Wolfgang's Vault with the rest of the Bill Graham archive, but that is really just wishful thinking on my part....
