Anyone notice the similarities between Scorpios cover and the artwork from a recent legit 2CD compilation...

Where does this info come from? I haven't heard this mentioned before, I doubt it sold well enough to go to a 2nd pressing, and if it had, it wouldn't be so rare. Smells like bootlegger bullshit to me. Many years ago I searched high and low for an original copy of this single, before giving up totally.
Well, you could always reference Oliviers site for confirmation that there were two diffent pressings. With different matrixes. And different masterings. The 12-64 is the hot one.

The Ostrich [2:25]
(Reed - Sims - Vance - Phillips)
Sneaky Pete
(Reed - Sims - Vance - Phillips)

The Primitives
7 inch single, Pickwick City PC-9001, December 1964

Lou Reed is credited as co-writer and takes lead vocals on both sides. This 45 was released by Pickwick with two different catalog numbers - PC-1001 and PC-9001. Both the number scratched in the matrix - the 9001 one has also a date in the matrix saying "12/64".

Just recieved my copy from Japan today. Here are some first impressions.

Disc One - House Band Of The Twilight Zone

1 Walk Alone 2 Miss Joanie Lee 3 Heroin 4 There She Goes Again I 5 There She Goes Again II 6 Get It On Time

Same as previously available everywhere. The key performances, editing out more than a bit of the tuning up. This is the good stuff in one place. Heroin not listed on the cover, but it's here.

7 I'll Keep it With Mine 8 European Son / Susie Q Quality of this version of the Cinemateque 2/66 material is as all others. Essential for the killer European Son & I'll Keep It With Mine. Thank G*d this performance was preserved on tape. Nice pic from this performance in the booklet.

9 Heroin 10 Venus In Furs 11 Waiting For The Man 12 European Son 13 All Tomorrows Parties The famous acetate, cleaned up in the studio, most listenable version that I have heard, though I certainly haven't heard every tweak job. The HEROIN is from a different acetate, much cleaner than any previously circulating copies that I have heard.

14 Heroin 15 Venus In Furs The Poor Richards film soundtrack, clean clear mono. One of my all time fave VU performances, Cale at his most sinister.

16 The Ostrich - Excellent transfer, as good as I've heard. Bold and deep bass sound is particularly striking

Disc Two - The VU From The Bandstand

1 I'm Not A Young Man Anymore 2 Waiting For The Man 3 Run Run Run 4 Sister Ray Nothing less than MINDBLOWING! Sourced from the master tape, not the vinyl bit torrent that circulates.

5 Sweet Sister Ray Superb as always, as good as it gets...

Disc Three - Warlocks Decapitating

1 We're Gonna Have A Real Good Time Together 2 Ride Into The Sun Fine quality studio demo's from acetate, these are the "less"commonly circulating versions, both alternate to PSAS.

3 Sweet Jane 4 I Can't Stand It 5 Sweet Bonnie Brown 6 It's Just Too Much 7 Heroin 8 Some Kinda Love 9 Sweet Bonnie Brown ll 10 Lisa Says
Rehearsals recorded by Robert Quine with the bands permission. Previously uncirculating, and unique to this release. Quality similar to the QUINE TAPES box set material

11 That's The Story Of My Life 12 Candy Says 13 Jesus 14 Sunday Morning Four tracks from the first night at Cole Avenue, Dallas 1969 in stereo from the original first gen cassette. Previously uncirculating, the AULICA label CD is mono & much reduced quality

15 Waiting For The Man 16 White Light, White Heat Super audience recorded by Quine 11/69 Previously uncirculating. Guitars WAY up front. Deadly performances.

17 Ocean Totally Mindblowing A+++++ quality with completely different lyrics.

Disc One 1 - 7 Rehearsal session Recorded at the Factory , NYC January 3 , 1966 8 Recorded Filmmakers Cinemateque, 125 W. 41st St, NYC February 6, 1966 9 - 13 Alternate Versions Recorded Scepter Studios, NYC April 18 - 23, 1966 14 - 15 Recorded Poor Richards, 1363 No. Sedgwick St., Chicago, Illinois June 23, 1966 16 Recorded 1964 Released on Pickwick City PC- 9001A ( RSVP 8.2 12-64 Matrix) by The Primitives

Disc Two 1-4 Recorded at The Gymnasium, 424 E. 71st St. NYC April 1967 5 Recorded at La Cave,10615 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, Ohio April 28, 1968

Disc Three 1 -2 Demo's recorded unknown location, late 1969 3 - 10 Rehearsals recorded either at the Matrix or Family Dog, San Francisco, California November 1969 11 - 14 Original first generation transfer of performances recorded at the End Of Cole Avenue club, Dallas ,Texas October 18,1969 15 - 16 Recorded unknown location, San Francisco, California November 11, 1969 17 Demo, recorded Winter 1970

Nice 20 page booklet is a plus. Some rare gig ad's not even listed on Olivier's site are reproduced in very high quality. A couple of contemporary articles circa 1966 that I haven't seen reprinted before are good for a laugh. . And definitely a few cool photo's that are new to me. The picture labels are a nice touch. All told, a very credible, and very listenable release. Just a few seconds under 4 hours of material.

'April Sounds' - Thats actually a half decent concept I like the idea of bringing the live & recorded material from the same month on a single disc to listen to. OK they have sourced it from torrents but the idea is there, more than can be said for the 'Dispatches..' set. I might even knock up my own DIY 'April Sounds' disc!
I got reply from seller of "April Sounds" today. He said he doesn't have any other copies of this but that it was definetly a factory pressed disc. So it is not a homemade edition. FYI

Could we get some clarification here? Info for the "Dispatches from the Dream Factory" release. There are different versions?

The listing on Oliveir's site shows "The Ostrich" like this: Disc 1: ... / 14. Venus In Furs / 15. The Ostrich. -- Sources: / ... 14-15: Poor Richard's, Chicago IL, June 23, 1966.

Then, the one on eBay shows it like this:

Disc One - House Band Of The Twilight Zone 1 The Ostrich ... Recorded 1964 Released on Pickwick City PC- 9001A ( RSVP 8.2 12-64 Matrix) by The Primitives

The location of the song on the disc is different on the two and so is the credit for the recording. I wonder if Olivier is mistaken? I know Venus In Furs was played there but I don't think "Ostrich" was played by the VU and never heard of it being played at Poor Richard's. If it was then this may really be a new "find", but I doubt it. Does anyone else have any more information?

I feel your pain , brother! But as the Scorpio label family had issued a number of worthwhile titles in the past, such as "Despite All The Amputations' , "True Rock and Roller" , "Bataclan" , "Flowers Of Evil", "Twisted Stars" , "Ostrich Hilltop" and "Problems In Urban Living" I decided to take a flyer (an "American Flyer" of sorts, I suppose, haha) it was a genuine thrill to find that this set delivered the goods, & then some...

A follow on listen has revealed just how great the Quine rehearsals are. Soon to be torrented, no doubt...
