next comment: "I don't mind if a CD comes out. Even the 'evil' bootleggers have to see a return on their investment and without them we wouldn't have even had this recording (or a bunch of others over the years).brmc69 wrote:my theory: coupla hundred of these will be put on vinyl and sell out. then the genuinely "complete" version comes out, with clean, "no vinyl pops" sound, on silver CD and we pay for it all over again.
I will always buy a CD or LP even if I can download a lossless audio file as I'm old fashioned and like material artefacts (they sound better and has anyone really ever got any pleasure from looking at a FLAC?)."
i know the bootleggers have to make a living too; certainly not putting them down. one of the great joys of my youth was going to flea markets and the "right" record stores and finding whatever treasures they had. hell, when i found out this was available i went to/ called every record shop (cd shop, whatever... showing my age!) in the village to buy a copy. woulda paid top dollah, too, but luckily i don't have to. although when the cd comes out, i'll do the same thing! and yeah, i dig hunting down flacs too; the search is definitely part of the fun!

Re: 1967 Gymnasium tapes
The pieces of Sister Ray that were on Twisted Stars are definitely from this performance - from near the beginning & minute 10.
So somebody's been sitting on this tape quite a while!
Many thanks to whoever got it out.....and many hopes that the rest will follow soon! "Walk It and Talk It", hmmm....
I'm Not a Young Man Anymore was so catchy, I can see why it didn't get on White Light, but what a tune! I loved the up-front guitar in Waiting for My Man, and Run Run Run was as wild & hairy as I'd hoped! (Wouldn't a live Heard Her Call My Name from '67 be wonderful?)
Sister Ray was great - BUT - after looking forward so long to a Sister Ray with Cale, ironically he's barely there. Can anyone hear what he's doing? Seems like basically a two-guitar version, though those big drones near the end are very Calean....
Overall a really good, high-energy show, though it doesn't have the "out-there" jams that we got from Columbus '66 and the 'Sweet Sister Ray' show so it's pretty similar to the '69 Velvets; too bad none of the viola songs were in this set!
I wonder who edited the tape - there are definitely cuts between songs, perhaps done by the original taper, but I would guess the bootlegger.
I wonder if this is really the "first" performance of Sister Ray, whether the bootlegger made that up - who would know, except Cale?
And I wonder if all the thirty people in the audience went out and formed their own bands afterwards....

as I said before, Cale's organ is way down in the mix, but it's there.fangedesire wrote: Sister Ray was great - BUT - after looking forward so long to a Sister Ray with Cale, ironically he's barely there. Re: 1967 Gymnasium tapes
Now that we've all gone crazy over the Gymnasium Tapes and how good they sound, I gave another listen to the snippets of the Matrix Tapes that were released here a while back. Oh, my gosh, do THEY sound good. Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE these recordings (especially the first ever Sister Ray - WOW!- I just go nuts over the heavy bass riffs in it), but I said it earlier in this thread, and I'll say it again...
FREE THE MATRIX TAPES!!!

Re: 1967 Gymnasium tapes
re: the organ on Sister Ray - remember that it's supposedly a soundboard tape. That means what you're hearing is mainly compensation for stage volume. That's why the vocals are so audible, also why levels fluctuate song to song. Probably then for "Sister Ray" Cale was cranked in the room!
Re: 1967 Gymnasium tapes
while we wait for a replay from tranehead...can we talk a little about the quine tapes outtakes? any info? complete shows? songs? i hope for at least 1 more sister ray
