here's some interesting replies to a comment I made when torrenting on Dime:
my comment:
My personal holy grail would be John Cale's complete tapes from The Gymnasium, April 1967......
brmc69 says:
i heard last year from someone very close to the source--friend of a big deal US bootlegger--that they were coming soon ("imminent" was the word he used), but nothing yet, unfortunately. but supposedly they are on the way...
velvetsfan says:
I have recently heard better masters have been procured and that the complete Gymnasium as well as a number of Quine outtakes will be available shortly.
interesting or what?
1967 Gymnasium tapes
Re: 1967 Gymnasium tapes
OK, that all sounds great. Wonderful, in fact. BUT... how long will it take for them to actually get to us? I'm tired of waiting. So many things are supposedly "almost here" that I can't help being selfish and wanting them to be available NOW!!!

Wow... I must hear those!
Re: 1967 Gymnasium tapes
Oh it makes me feel so sad when i start thinking about all the may lost live recordings.
I write about this in a other topic some months ago.
Take a look at Oliver's site at Live recordings or WGO Tape list, it exist a lot recordings they are not in circulation.
I dont understand why some people are sitting on theier recordings whiteout any sharing
If they losing the tapes or they pass away the tapes are lost forever.
Its a shame......really
Sorry for my bad english

Re: 1967 Gymnasium tapes
I've never been convinced that all the tapes listed in WGO actually exist (or ever did).
Ref Olivier's site: if he lists a track listing, then the tape actually does exist. If he simply refers to a mention in WGO, then there is no certainty that the tape exists, only that it was listed in WGO.....
I personally believe that the list in that old WGO mag was a compilation of every tape or show that had ever been mentioned by someone or heard of anecdotally by Phil Milstein. If he had "heard" any of them I think he would have also given the track listing.

Re: 1967 Gymnasium tapes
should also have mentioned - I think that all the circulating (but officially unreleased) VU live tapes have been torrented on Dime or another torrent site over the last 6 months or so. I cant think of any which are commonly available but have not been seeded.....
Re: 1967 Gymnasium tapes
The release of the Gymnasium tapes would be great, but I have heard this rumour of their "immenent" release for a couple of years now. I'll believe it when I see it.
I completely agree with Gordon about the WGO tape lists. There is so much confusion about dates, and to be honest some of those that really did exist must have turned to dust by now. Or been lost, thrown out or erased.
I'm reading Lou's biography by Victor Bockris at the moment and was suprised to hear that he had to go and buy an unplayed copy of The Bells and use it for the Between Thought and Expression anthology, because the master had rotted away on record company shelves, because of poor storage. What chance does some privately recorded tape from the sixties stand?

Re: 1967 Gymnasium tapes
Like most of you, I think it would be great if they were released soon.
But I also only believe it when they're out.
And btw, in 'All Yesterdays' Parties: The Velvet underground In Print 1966-1971' By Clinton Heylin,
he writes about a song named 'I'm Not a Young Man Anymoore' wich he also describes and claims they are included in the Gymnasium Tapes.
Do you really thinks this is true?
