I'd like to thank Doctor Bob for sticking up for me. I wasn't intending to cause offence by expressing my opinions on The Smiths, Morriseey etc but just to liven things up a bit and generate a healthy debate. I was really hoping that someone would come back with a decent argument about why Morrissey and Reed should be considered peers because to me they appeal to very different audiences.

Now THAT is a comment that generates good conversation! See ya back in the Moz or Lou thread.

I think the real problem is that there's very little to talk about that hasn't been churned over a million times already. Significant new boots are few and far between and the only new official stuff released since the Quine tapes are those couple of original mixes on that comp. Things are pretty dead in the VU world.

How funny! I ust checked in tonight for the first time in a couple of months. Had to smile at seeing this thread; funny, smart-ass kind of thing to post (in a good-humored way). I don't know why the hell I've wandered off, I honestly like everyone here, it's a good bunch of people, the board has always been splendidly moderated, and though the discussions have sometimes been childish or testy, it was never really upsetting in any way.

I guess, for one thing, and this is just me, discussion of the solo careers holds barely any interest for me. It's always puzzled me how I can be such a rabid Velvets nut, and completely fall of the bus when we go beyond that boundary. To see an excited new thread pop up with a link to a lossless Reed show somewhere in Italy does nothing for me. And, as folks have said, that's kind of all we've got that's moving forward and fluid at the moment, Cale and Reed's solo careers. I don't think they suck solo, I just, oddly, don't really care. Sort of like the time when I subscribed to "Beatlefan" magazine. It eventually dawned on me that all they had to talk about were city by city reviews of Paul's solo concerts. Now, I don't have a problem with Paul McCartney by a long shot, but I couldn't help thinking, this isn't the Beatles, what do I care how "Live And Let Die" went down in Barcelona?

And when we do branch out and talk about other music, it seems to me that it's kind of a narrow alley that we roam. It's mostly that Dolls/Stooges/Heartbreakers type of axis. Not always, but alot. Having said that, though, of course the obvious reply is that it's up to ME to open up new avenues if that's where I want to go. I haven't done much of that, so my ass could use a kicking in that regard.

Maybe it's time for a little rejuvination on my part. There's a heap of threads I haven't looked at, so I'm off to catch up.

I think that we all want what Hendrix fans have enjoyed- dozens upon dozens of new studio tracks and live shows that are still being released some 37 years after his demise. We have been fortunate; there has been alot of VU material that has surfaced, much of it from the fans. There is more material in the vaults that will surely see daylight as well as a live show or two that have not seen daylight. Until then, we can enjoy what we do have. [/list]

Hmm.. but hendrix was a much bigger deal during his own time than the VU were. There were far more people taping shows and who knew to keep the tapes safe.

Glad to see ya back! A lot of people ran away when Groovymusic was at her most annoying, which was really hurting the forum.

When there is not even a trickle of news or hints about future releases, there is almost nothing left to talk about regarding the VU. Personally, solo Lou hasn't interested me in years (aside from his Berlin shows), so all I have to listen to are shows I have heard 10,000 times already. Sometimes, something new pops up...maybe a fellow board-member contacts me with some shows that even Olivier hadn't heard before (regarding Lou) and I upload them. But more often than not, it is a waiting game.

In terms of other artists, I agree that there is a thread of music we all listen to: Stooges, Dolls, Heartbreakers, Ramones...then some of us branch out into Wire or Television...personally, I am listening to Morrissey constantly now (see thread below!), so much so that I started a new forum (see the "General Discussion" forum!).

Right, and you can't argue with that stuff, BUT, that's only one lane of the highway. I'd like to branch out beyond the edgy street stuff, after awhile, you need a break from the spikes and boots. Would be nice to talk about, say, James Brown, Big Star, The Zombies, Bo Diddley, Johnny Cash, Phil Spector, Ravi Shankar, old blues guys like Son House, you know, just go all over the map into a wider musical range. I worship at the alter of Nina Simone, for instance, she goes so damn deep, I always choke up. And here's a few elbows to the guts of all that is punk: First shot> Donna Summer is one of my favorite singers - such a warm, beautiful voice - melts me every time. I love her. Second shot> I'd call "Dancing Queen" a perfect song. Those harmonies over that melody is shattering. Third shot> I think Culture Club's second album was fantastic, one of the best of the eighties, a wonderful slice of exquisitely crafted pop.

So guys, what are some of your own break-the-mold musical tastes? Even if alot of artists come up that people may not be familiar with, it would be cool to open up the discussion and maybe someone will stumble onto something that they have a taste for which they'd never have expected.

Err.... I used to listen to quite a lot of Eighties/Nineties UK guitar rock (what they used to call "indie"), such as The Smiths/Morrissey, The Fall, The Wedding Present/Cinerama, Joy Division/New Order, The Stone Roses etc. but I don't do that much anymore. Same with the Big Three Reed/Dylan/Young (and their understudy Leonard Cohen). All of this is of course hardly mould-breaking stuff. Mouldy, perhaps

Actually, I like to listen to Fifties/early Sixties jazz (such as Ornette Coleman, John Coltrane, some Miles). The Yellow Magic Orchestra, once in awhile.... There's this R&B/soul compilation by Universal I quite like... And cheesy pop such as Bucks Fizz. Nurse... screens?
