I voted for Quine, he's great on Live In Italy and A Night With Lou Reed.
Come to think of it weren't Dick and Steve both "lead" guitarists? (Not that I would've voted for him.) And I'm not sure if I'd consider Mike Rathke a lead guitarist per se.
Of course, no one comes close to 1) Sterl 2) Lou and 3) Doug ("What Goes On," "One Of These Days," "Rock And Roll"...!!) on VU records but I know that wasn't the point here.

Wow, I cant believe how few votes Heinrich has gotten (I am one of the 2!). I can rattle off a dozen bootlegs that have him playing absolutely STELLAR! Chief among them is probably the April '78 Park West bootleg. He had some killer shows during that summer '78 Bottom Line stint as well. If anyone has heard the early shows on the Growing Up In Public tour, most notably on the "Bringin' The Streets To Life" bootleg, you'll know what I'm talkin' about. The Everyman Band is my fave backing band for Lou. I should buy their CD eventually.
As far as Vinny LaPorta, I am curious why some people decided to choose him! Not that I dont like his guitar playing, but I'd just like to know what makes him stand out to some!!
I agree with Homo Superior (Pete Shelly reference!) about Rathke not necessarily being a lead guitarist. I think that with Lou's usual lineup, Rathke & Lou both play rhythm guitar, with Lou taking some leads. A very competent sideman, but not a true lead? I dunno...just ponderin'.
