who is that knocking ... knocking at my chamber door?

Post by simonm »

Probably my most obscure post yet, but I was listening to Sister Ray on headphones at work just now, the stereo version....

Recent talk about this mightiest of tracks has reminded me of an anecdote from Moe about the recording - maybe from the PSAS book, can't remember where I read it. Basically at the point in the song where Lou does his E A Poe thing with the knocking at his chamber door, Moe is hitting a drum to illustrate the knock, but it wasb't mic'ed so it isn't audible, and as we all know ther was only one take.
Many times I Have tried to imagine this 'knocking' sound being in there, and today I heard it for the first time. Around 6.30 the line comes and the knocking comes between the two phrases in my subject line. It sounds like she is just rattling the drum rims rather than hitting the skins, and you can just hear it. On later live versions Moe uses a pair double time snare cracks for the knocking, but on the studio version it's more of a rattle. Check it out.

All right

I have the whole PSAS set & Another View on my hard drive as MP3s, but the media player doesn't work right so it always defaults to Sister Ray. Good choice. Got it on again now - I can put it on the speakers before 9am!
Espresso and Sister Ray to start the day.

And I'm grooving to a self-compiled Captain Beefheart "best of" on the headphones.
