Live 1969: Good news/bad news

Post by jimjim »

Good news: 'Live 1969' is being re-issued on vinyl:

http://www.originalrecordingsgroup.com/ ... log_p3.htm

Scheduled for release this year on 180Gm Vinyl too.

Bad news: It's following the same format as the CDs - two seperate bloody volumes. So we'll never get that great gatefold ever again. Don't they get it? It was a released as a double, so re-release it as a double!!!

Anybody got any idea if it'll be from the same sources as the old LP/CDs, or are these from better masters?

As someone heading toward ebay to seek out an LP version of this recording, is there much of a difference in sound quality between original pressings and the reissues that followed? Many, many Merc LPs available 'sealed', pretty much all reissues of varying dates. One interesting Rhino reissue that I didn't even know existed. thanks

PS good forum!

Two LPs, with the bastardised CD artwork? That really is inexcusible.

That's an interesting thought. If they have the Matrix tapes (as the recently surfaced excerpts would suggest), I wonder if there's any chance they might use these to sneakily 'upgrade' the masters for Live '69...?

They actually have had access to even better quality masters than the acetates - yes the real master TAPES. Whether they've been able to use them for this re-release seems to be anybody's guess...

Correct me if I'm wrong but I did read when they came out that that the 2 CD re-issue volumes were not from (or all from) the same source as the original 1970's LP as they no longer had access to the tapes at that time. I remember reading that they had to master something from acetates. I'm sure others have a better memory of this.

With regards LP re-issues, I can't imagine that they'd have access to the new Universal (bootleg series) copies and if they did they'd sure let you know on the cover as it would be an extra selling point.

The tapes used to master the original 1974 LPs were sourced from acetates - for the Matrix tracks at least. The subsequent CDs were from the same source, ie acetate > tape > CD rather than acetate > tape > LP.

It's so frustrating that no one can do a deal with Peter Abrams, who still has the unedited 4-track masters from which the acetates were sourced. The stuff he has not only has lots of extra material, it shows up the sound quality of both the acetates and the subsequent LPs and CDs as absolute dreck by comparison.
