Any Thoughts On 'I Shot Andy Warhol'?

Post by woodengnome »

I am planning on renting this film (haven't seen it) and was wondering what some of you folks here thought of it. Does it stay true to the facts?

It's okay. See Basquiat instead.

It's very similar to "Popism" by Warhol (which is an awesome book, and a must read for any self respecting VU fan.) Some of the dialouge is word for word. I didn't really like the guy who played Warhol, but Lili Taylor makes an awesome Valerie. It even has a brief scene with the Velvets (actually Yo La Tengo) doing an EPI style show at a Factory party. The actors playing the Superstars (especially that Spranos guy who played Ondine) were also awesome.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will check out "Basquait", but can't seem to find "Popism". Was that the name of the book, but not the film?

I got my copy of popism off of half.com. They still have a bunch available. It's probably out of print by now, seeing as it was written in the late 70's. Other sites with used books, like amazon and barnes and noble will probably have it, too.

Well, I saw the film and it was decent- not great. I agree that they could have cast someone better for the part of Warhol. John Cale soring the film was a plus. Now I have to check out 'Basquait'.
