Best Quality MOVE BACK!

Post by GroovyMusic »

There's been a lot of talk lately about what the best quality version of 'If It's Too Loud For You Move Back!' is. The original? The new "remix"? The vinyl transfer of the Columbus record?

How about 'Caught Between The Twisted Stars'?

Don't have "Move Back" but judging from the clips, I'd agree "Twisted Stars" has the better sound. Isn't "Twisted Stars" edited though, the between song stuff taken out?

'Twisted stars' sounds even better than Melody Laughter on PSAS!

('Twisted stars isn't entirely unedited--and it doesn't have 'The Nothing Song'--but the sound quality is significantly better. I would say 'Move Back!' is one generation below the source for Twisted Stars as crazy as that sounds.)

Actually, "Nothing Song" is there, but it's on the second disc, not the first. The whole show doesn't fit on one disc, they had to bump that onto the first song on disc 2.

Oh yeah. I overlooked that.

So, what does everyone else think? To me, 'Twisted Stars' is the one that sounds like a "digital mix from the original tape".

Twisted Stars has more tape hiss than Move Back, that's for sure. Whether this means that someone did an NR job on the latter or it's just from a better copy, I don't know.

Other than that, they don't really sound any different to me and having done a quick spectral analysis in Adobe Audition it appears that the frequency response is pretty much the same - with the exception of the squealy bits, both versions cut out just above 6000 Hz.

It's been my experience that high levels of tape hiss usually entail a kick-ass upgrade!!

So, now that more people on this forum have expanded their Velvet Underground bootleg collection, what does everyone else think about this?

I think CBTTS should definitely be considered an upgrade, and I think that it should be used to patch 'Move back!' for the ultimate Valleydale Ballroom show.

I love "Twisted Stars" too.
But there are no stars in New York sky, they're all on the ground.
