help find Val Valentin mix 3rd on vinyl please

Post by iaredatsun »

Help!

I'm trying to get a clean copy of the Val Valentin mix of the 3rd LP on vinyl. It seems pretty hard.

I have the MGM repress with the yellow label which is the VV mix but the sound is pretty bad. You can barely hear the guitar in the right hand channel on Set Free, for example ? compared with the CD.

Last year I bought a fairly good 60's copy of the US pressing and was slightly disappointed to find that it had the closet mix.

All UK copies were the closet mix. The first UK press I found with laminated cover was closet and the 70's presses were too. Even the 80's boxset is closet.

Can a VV mix 3rd LP be identified by matrix stamp or any other detail before buying a copy?

I feel like I have the VV mix on an '85 release, but I'll need to check to be sure. I'll let you know when I get the chance!

I've never been sure what each reissue exactly contained - but I can confirm that my copy of the UK original (as described on Oliver's site) does indeed contain the Valentin mix - completely different "Some Kinda Love" to what is on the 80's UK box that you mention (this boxset is what I grew up listening to, so I'm completely certain).

MGM CS 8108, Side 1: 2YMG 291 - 1G, Side 2: 2YMG 292 - 1G. It does appear on Ebay from time to time and the price can be quite variable.

Briski. [EDIT]. OK, I see you mean the horizontal split back version. I'd love one ? but I think they're pretty rare!

What about USA copies ? weren't all but the first pressing meant to be VV mixes? I couldn't see any cat/matrix number change when the VV mix was introduced from what i can gather reading Olivier's listings. Did the VV mix correctly list Some Kind of Love as 4' ?

How about Japan presses? There are a few but I can't find out any info about the mix they used

I have just done a quick side-by-side between my LP and the '96 CD with the VV mix, and also between my LP and the PSAS closet mix. The LP I have definitively has the VV mix on both sides! The more obvious cues include the VV take of "Some Kinda Love" and the shorter version of "Beginning...," but the general sound is a giveaway too. I'd say this pressing is pretty clean. The bass womps along well and the guitars are nice and sharp. In some songs, however, the sibilance distorts where the '96 CD doesn't, which is unfortunate. Another little thing I noticed is that while the bass in After Hours on the CD is hard right, the bass is centered on the LP.

This release is featured on Oliver's site under USA LPs. It's the only one from '85 so it should be easy to find on the page! I don't now if this release is too new for you or not, but if you need more info just let me know!

PlanckEra. Thanks for the info. According to discogs there was a USA release in '85 and one in '86. The '85 is 'Remastered at Sterling Sound, New York - September, 1984 ' and has catalogue No. 422-815 454-1 Y-1. The the '86 listing has a catalogue number of 815454-1 and has no info about mastering.

With regards After Hours and bass. You're right - it's different. But my '96 CD has the bass hard left, so unless there's something weird going on, I guess one of us has their CD player wired up incorrectly. And I'm pretty sure it's not me ;). As with your LP, the yellow label MGM 180gm repress seems to have the bass more or less centred which makes it appear that there might be a mix variation in the VV mix.

Trouble buying these LPs is that no one selling knows which is which and it also seems that the track timing can be wrong judging by the yellow MGM repress, so that cannot be relied on.

Still like to hear about the Japanese issues.

Saw a UK first issue third album today in town. Horizontal split. Worth a punt at ?20? Its only 'fair' though. The guy said it plays ok. I reckon I could get it for less as he always gives me a discount.

:D Got it for ?10. Nice copy - much better than 'fair' - more like VG.

I just looked at Olivers page. I didn't realise so few of the UK first issue were pressed.
I also saw this > don't know if ppl are still after the Valentin mix but the Simply Vinyl reissue from '99 has the VV mix.

I don't think it's been mentioned on this thread.
