I thought Sally Mae was a reference to SM. Because the lyrics are kind of in the same atmosphere ...

Jonathan Richman used to cover "At My Front Door" all the time in the late 1970s and early 1980s (and the Modern Lovers covered Foggy Notion years before).
It's like these guys all shared one record collection!

Re: Hy Weiss and the writing of "Foggy Notion"
So it was credited to only Lou Reed on the original release of VU
At some point (when they created the Velvet Underground company to deal with the business side?) they gave all 4 band members a credit because it was a ?jam? song.
Then Hy Weiss started litigation (based on exactly what still isn?t clear) ? but could it be that Lou then removed his name so that the other members of VU co still received a quarter of the royalties ? rather diluting it to a fifth by ading Weiss?
I guess at the time, the other 3 would have been oblivious to whatever it was that Lou stole. So maybe he felt bad for them?
Or is this just so uncharacteristically ?Lou? that I?m miles off the mark?
