Am I crazy or are all of these "Japanese" Velvets boots only available from one source? That's how it seems. I have wondered this for some time now.

This one has been put out by Scorpio, a well-established boot outfit - they have had a pretty good rep for getting the best sources for their Dylan boots for several years - but I'd still tend to agree with MG, in this case the discs are probably mastered from the same circulating files...

From what I understand, the Scorpio name has been taken over by a Japanese concern.

I was able to order a copy of this direct from a Japanese mail order outfit:
http://www.beastone.com. Their price is surprisingly cheap: $60 US. Typical going price for the set in the US seems to be about $95.

The sound is better than the versions currently circulating, but not significantly so. Still, as it seems highly unlikely the Tea Party shows will see a legitimate release, this set will probably stand as the final word.

Yes, the track listings are a bit out of whack, but that was done so all of the material could fit onto 4 CDs; the January 10 and March 15 shows being too long to fit onto a single CD.

This set compiles 4 audience recordings of Velvet Underground shows at the Boston Tea Party in 1969.

January 10, March 13, and July 11 are from the famous 'Professor' reels (two others exist: December 12, 1968 at The Boston Tea Party, and August 2, 1969 at Hilltop Festival).

March 15 is also known as "The Guitar Amp Tape".

"Move Right In" on disc 2 is from January 10 recording and should be placed between "Heroin" and "I'm Set Free".

"Candy Says" on disc 4 is from March 15 recording and should be placed between "I Can't Stand It" and "Waiting For The Man".

Despite the back cover reads otherwise, disc 1 has actually 9 tracks (no track separation between "Heroin" and "I'm Set Free, same between "What Goes On" and "I Can't Stand It"), and disc 4 has 11 tracks (track 1 "Intro" is not listed).

hmm.. upon further listen it seems like SOME of the tracks are better quality than the ones I already have. But some of them seem worse (that's the story.. from praise ye seems better for example)

I got a copy of this from Beastone Japan yesterday.The sound is better than my previous copies of all shows except the guitar amp tape which is marginally worse.15/3/69 doesn't sound to have been sourced from vinyl like the 'Legendaly' version.It's a nice item tho' expensive for what it is but doesn't feel as much of a rip off as the Nothing Songs releases. . . . . }<{("<


Speaking of the guitar amp tape,years ago I had a different edit of this.Can't Stand It had a count in and there were no jumps starts to any tracks there was audience noise then the next song would start.H went into Sister Ray after the former had almost faded down to nothing.Alas my tape was lost many moons ago tho' i have a copy of part of it.I confess to using it as a karaoke backing track and dubbing my voice onto it!!. . . . .[ hangs head in shame . . . . gets coat. . . ]

I think that this set has been seriously underrated by all of us. I've been listening to these cds and comparing them to the previously circulating copies and there is no doubt that all the shows are in much better quality here. The guitar amp tape is a lower generation than even the afterhours tape version but unfortunately there is an annoying cut where heroin goes into sister ray (they have cross-faded sister ray in too early). Presumably they did this to get it to fit onto the cds but it is very annoying because the change into sister ray is one of the highlights of the 15/3/69 show. Even with this I think that this is a significant upgrade.

Hopefully we'll eventually get the bootleg series version without the cuts..............................

I generally agree. My old "cassette" copy of 15 March 69 has a nice clean (uncut) transition between "H" and "Ray" but I'm really not convinced that the 4CD set version is any better, generation-wise.

I personally dont think we'll ever see these come out "officially" - this 4CD set + the "4th generation" copy of 12/12/68 I upped to Dime are going to be it I think.....(a friend of mine has a copy of the Polygram "remaster" of 12/12/68 and said that it's not significantly better than my "4th gen" copy)
