Vinyl rip of the Sundazed 4th box set
Re: Vinyl rip of the Sundazed 4th box set
And thanks again from over here. Excellent rip, and despite the same mixes being used it does sound different from the original releases - perhaps some of the reverb etc was actually added at the original mastering stage.

Re: Vinyl rip of the Sundazed 4th box set
Thanks, Jez, Deck, Warlock, Mark and everyone else, and a special thanks to Simon (iaredatsun) for endless support, advice, ripping tips, and encouragement! I'm glad everyone has enjoyed it and found the rip to be of good quality.
Now that I've got my vinyl ripping process back in gear, I am going to head back to the third album and attempt some rips of some variants I've wanted to share with you all:
1.) The first appearance of the Valentin Mix, the 1969 MGM UK pressing that was limited to 500 copies. I think you'll all notice quite a difference here; the remastering in the editions since 1984 sound more modern compared to this version. It definitely sounds more like it came from the '60s.
2.) The 1971 MGM Select UK pressing. A bootleg CD set out there claims that this pressing has a unique "brightly EQ'ed" variant of the Closet Mix. I've only spun this record once before, and I did notice it sounded a tad different, but I didn't think much of it (being 40-plus-year-old vinyl and all), but I'm intrigued now.
The same bootleg set I reference in #2 above also has a white label promo Closet Mix (US, 1969) that supposedly contains elements of the Closet Mix and Valentin Mix both, and is supposedly known as the "Alternate Closet Mix". I have a promo from 1969, but I'm not sure if it's the white label one or not (yellow label promos exist, too). If I do have the white label one, I might rip that too.
In the end, I'll have enough rips of 3rd album variants to make my own "Deluxe Edition"...hmmm...I could include the alternate mixes from the Sterling and Mo acetates...I could be on to something here

Thanks so much for the rip, leamanc. I downloaded it a few days ago, but haven't had a chance to listen until right now.
The quality of the rip is great. The actual mastering of it sounds very good to me - in the past, I've had the Japanese VU LP, and the 2 SHM CDs from the 'lost album' era, and this isn't too far below those. I can't wait for some more of your rips, particularly the 3rd Valentin, which I don't remember ever hearing.

I've ripped my copy of the 3rd album reel to reel, would be happy to share or add to leamanc's Deluxe Edition.
Re: Vinyl rip of the Sundazed 4th box set
Thanks, David! I really appreciate the feedback. I have those SHM CDs, and it's very flattering for my rip to be compared to those discs. But the thing that makes me the most happy is that you are enjoying listening to it.DavidH wrote:Thanks so much for the rip, leamanc. upsetter, yes please let me know how I can get a copy of your reel-to-reel rip. I've decided to take this Deluxe Edition project seriously, and would love to collect all material possible.upsetter wrote:I've ripped my copy of the 3rd album reel to reel, would be happy to share or add to leamanc's Deluxe Edition.
Speaking of making custom box sets, I've seen a few around the 'net -- I believe I saw it somewhere here that someone made a custom Smiths singles box set, and I also remember a custom New Order set -- and I would like to know if anyone has any idea where to get materials to make a nice box. I can design covers and a nice booklet, but I don't know where to look to get a custom-size box (with custom printing done on the box).
Does anyone have any leads on where to acquire materials suitable for making a quality homemade CD box set? Thanks in advance. Like I said, I'm taking this idea seriously now, and once it's realized, I'd probably charge a small fee to cover the cost of production, but would gladly give free copies to all my Velvet Forum friends who contribute in any way to the project.

thank you very much for that. It really sounds great. Great work!

Ok, here's a link to the rip of the third album reel to reel rip, together with box art scans. I can't hear any difference from the original US release, except the sides are in the wrong order!

Thanks, upsetter, I appreciate the link.
Speaking of wrong order, I have the original 8-track of this album, and the songs have been randomly re-arranged in the way that only 8-tracks were. I've never been able to play it, since I haven't had a working 8-track player since 1988 or so. Plus it looks like it will need some of that famous 8-track cart repair.
I'll probably skip trying to resurrect it...unless I hear that it has some super-rare alternate version of "The Murder Mystery" or something

Not the Smiths or the New Order one mentioned - this one is a Can box and a different style:leamanc wrote:Speaking of making custom box sets, I've seen a few around the 'net -- I believe I saw it somewhere here that someone made a custom Smiths singles box set, and I also remember a custom New Order set -- and I would like to know if anyone has any idea where to get materials to make a nice box.
