So, a Velvets-sounding song............
One of my many nominees:
"Patrick Ewing" - an instrumental by Space Needle, from Voyager, which see.

Oddly Emmylou Harris' version of "Orphan Girl" has a very early VU /"Venus In Furs" feel (um, but without the screeching and slashing viola). It's on the 1995 Daniel Lanois-produced album Wrecking Ball. S'great.
[edit - 10yrs out on the date! and it's more ATP than VIF]

Everyone says that about Luna but I'm not really convinced. I don't find the lyrics reminiscent of the Velvets particularly ("Tigerlily girl standing cross-eyed at the corner" anyone?), I don't find the lead vocals similar to Lou, and I don't hear any Cale-ish avant garde elements. Some of the guitar work is vaguely similar to Sterl (apart from the songs with Sterl playing on them of course!) but I think the VU similarity is far from striking.
Great band though.
(Just my $0.02 worth)

Yeah, lyrically of course they're a whole lot more winsome and lighter - or at least, when they get dark, they're a different shade of dark. Sonically I think there are similarities. I haven't listened for a while but the one that comes to mind most is the aforementioned '23 Minutes', especially with the Tucker-esque thud at the start.
And yes, they are/were a great band.

Ooh yes. Quite a bit of Pulp's mid '80s output sounds to me like an attempt to be a British '80s indieland version of the VU - albeit more the creepy ballads than the noisy rockers. 'Little Girl (With Blue Eyes)' is another one that springs to mind.

Well, funny you should say that but Cale's soundtrack version of this from about 11 years ago did feature a Lou-less version of the VU on it..along with others. It's a cool version!
