Explain bootlegs to me

(and feel free to move this if it belongs in the other section.)

all I know about bootlegs is that they're awesome. but who puts them out? how much does it cost? why do the producers only release limited amounts of copies? how can a person package and sell someone else's materials and get away with not paying royalties (or do they have to)? Anything you can tell me is more than I know.

That's a great but endless discussion...the best way to be introduced into the world of bootles is to read a book by Clinton Heylin called THE GREAT WHITE WONDERS...a fantastic read, with some nice Velvets mentions...

mr Heylin recently updated his book - it has a new name but it escapes me. still well worth a read....
