** V.U. Song Contest - First Round **

Well, the preliminaries are over, 28 songs made it into the main tournament where they will be joined by the 36 best-known VU songs.

The prelims saw some hard-fought matches that hung on one or two votes ('Satellite of Love' vs. 'One of These Days', 'I'm Not Too Sorry' vs. 'I Love You', 'Coney Island Steeplechase' vs. 'Ferryboat Bill'), two whitewashes ('Who's That Man' vs. 'Guess I'm Falling in Love' and 'Mama's Little Girl' vs. 'The Murder Mystery', both not unexpectedly involving post-Lou material) and of course some grumblings about the inclusion of Squeeze songs.

But most of all, and it's one of the key aims I hoped to achieve when I set about organising this contest, it saw people discussing the relative merits of VU songs again, reasons why they loved particular songs. :D

The Contest will resume today or tomorrow at the latest. I'll move the starting (and closing) moment to (around) 18:00 hours CET to allow for the office situation  Be prepared for some hard choices because the dross has been dealt with in the prelims. From now on, it's gonna hurt.

Is the draw going to be announced bit by bit or will you have it all on the website before any action begins? Also, will the winners of round 1 be thrown into the hat & randomly drawn for round two?

Action starts just about now, I'm going to enter the first three matches in a moment. As for the matches, lots were drawn last weekend and the horrible results (see e.g. matches 9 and 16) are up for everyone to see over on the Foggy Notion site.

There will be no tennis-style tree (as there are no seeds), each round will see hat-drawn random pairings.

You had to pitch two of my (and I'm sure many others) favourite VU songs together:

I'm Waiting For The Man vs. Rock & Roll

Fuuuuuuuck!

Arjan, you (or fate or what we should call it) has been cruel to us :-).
But, it's kinda fun too, I have been listening to every LP, CD, 7"and tape I have of VU material (official or un-official) in the last weeks, and found that I really can't live without these songs ;-)

You're hurting yourself / but you can't blame me, as some late-twentieth-century poet once said :P

I wrote a little random-number-out-of-hat program to deal with the strict neutrality of the draw.

Noooooo, I have to go on holiday for a week tomorrow, and I'm going to miss out on voting! Is it possible someone could vote for me? My choices are pretty simple, anything from VU and Nico and White Light/White Heat would get my vote off anything from the self titled album, Loaded or a comp (with the exception of What Goes On, the Murder Mystery and Beginning To See The Light= songs I love). Anyway, it doesn't matter if you can't vote for me, but... bleh. I'm off to Wales for a week! Ciao!
