Here's a transfer of Bill's copy of this show. I can't compare sound quality with the material on the "Final V.U. 1971-1973" box set because my copy of that release is still sealed. Bill's copy sounds pretty good to me.....

There are relatively long periods of tuning between some of the songs so I have split the tracks where it seemed appropriate.

Bill bought this cassette from a guy (or woman) in Lampeter in February 1981 - according to the letter slipped inside the inlay card he paid £4.50 for it.

Well it's definitely the same source, but the version on Final VU has clearly had some work done on it to brighten up the sound and is a tad louder and less murky sounding, but there isn't much in it

This show always makes me laugh, as I had a friend who made a total mess of his A Levels and ended up at Lampeter University in the late 80s.
He worked on the Ents committee there and said that, even 15 years later, they were always really proudly crowing about how they once had the Velvet Underground play the main hall. It didn't go down too well when he pointed out that it wasn't exactly their *best* line up.

The crowd sound up for it on the tape though - and I'm sure that is because there was close to nothing else better to do in Lampeter!

IIRC circa 1982 or 1983 an ad appeared regularly for a while in the small ads at the back of the NME (I think), saying something like: "Velvet Underground fans, you don't have everything!", followed by a Lampeter contact address. I think I actually belatedly wrote to the address some time after the ad stopped appearing, but got a reply saying something to the effect that they weren't "currently operating" or something. I think I assumed, even at the time, that they were probably selling copies of the Lampeter gig, as I think I was already aware of the recording's existence somehow.
