Hinted at today by Ecstatic Peace for a 8th June announcement?

The Velvet Underground book ‘to end all books’ he says. Unseen photographs. Ignacio Julià. I won’t attempt to explain. Just go here to the old 2021 instagram link:

Cool! But whether it can top Richie's Day by Day book remains to be seen. IMO that's the VU book to end all VU books. And unless new source material and footage surfaces, it seems like there's not much more to say at this pont. I'll be happy to be proven wrong.

I seriously doubt that the aim of the book is to replace the Unterberger book. I think Thurston Moore's hyperbole is nothing more than an expression of excitement.

’Linger On: The Velvet Underground’ by Ignacio Julià with principal photography by James Hamilton releasing 29 August 2022 (Sterling Morrison’s 80th birthday). In 1965 artist Andy Warhol met The Velvet Underground in New York City. The group included Lou Reed, John Cale, Sterling Morrison & Maureen Tucker. The subjects of the lyrics in their unforgettable songs (scribed by Reed prior to the Warhol meetings) worked harmoniously and sublimely with the subjects of Warhol’s films. The Velvet’s loud noise explorations accompanied by poetic drug references wowed audiences w/ live expanded cinema. The band were the antithesis of popular hippie and surf hits of the 1960s, paving the way for glam and punk rock. The publisher of this new, collectible illustrated book is Thurston Moore (a serious fanatic of Velvets music and legend.) EPL assembled an entourage of truly obsessed
Velvet fans. “LINGER ON features Ignacio’s long lost interviews with the ‘Scooby-core’: Lou, John, Moe & Sterling after lovingly revisiting his old cassette tapes. He offers up his insider’s scoop-age and probing interview questions and conversations with all the main characters including German actress & model Nico, who added her singularly profound voice as lead singer, understudied later member Doug Yule, Gerard Malanga (whip dancer & Factory favourite) as well as VU documentarian Todd Haynes, and musicians Jackson Browne and Lenny Kaye. Other contributions to the text include an Introduction by Scottish rocker Primal Scream frontman (and author) Bobby Gillespie as well as a Foreword by British bassist (My Bloody Valentine’s) Deb Googe. And for fans certain they’ve already seen everything, this new Velvet volume includes never before published portraits by New York Village Voice photographer James Hamilton — who worked collaboratively with Lou and John — shooting the album cover art for Songs for Drella, endearing himself to Lou, who notoriously refused (and abused) the press.” To celebrate the launch of this new book, we are at work on an author’s tour & photo exhibition to be announced with a pre-order link this month!

I'm afraid the author is missing the punk aspect of surf music. It's surprising, because he also wrote a book on The Ramones.

I doubt Ignacio Julià wrote the publisher’s sales blurb. It’d likely to have been the publisher. I can’t comment on the argument that surf was or was not punk in intention, but I suspect the blurb is referring to popular surf music hits like the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean - purely for rhetorical effect.

Whoever wrote it, I think it's sad that the extremely wrong notion that the post-Elvis / pre-Beatles / pre-Dylan era in rock and roll was just a teen idol era is still being spread around.

Agreed that's how lazy writers like to present a false binary to make it seem like VU is the only band at that time making progressive challenging music. As if it was them versus teeny bop nonsense.
