Hi everybody,

I've posted the following message in the Lou Reed forum yesterday...but maybe some of you have listened to it and can add further information on this album? It's on Design, a division of Pickwick Records in the 60s...

...here you have the original post...

Hi everybody,

I have a complete (or so i think...) collection of pre-velvets recordings and i've just came across this album on ebay...has anyone listened to this ??? I've never seen it listed before, not even in Olivier's site or the Velvets Handbook by Kostek, but you never know...(from the label, it could pretty well be true...)

Thanks, Nuno

Sounds to me like an ebay seller trying to drum up interest. I think Lou's involvement in this record is in the 'maybe, but unproved' category. Here's some discussion from WFMU, the bomp mailing list, and I found a download link for the album here (link not yet tested).

I'm sure that the voice on this song is Lous voice. I listened to the track a several times....this must be Lou. Lou is a little bit too much in the background, but there are some shades that tells me that this is Lou.

And by the way: the "Soundville" LP is also produced by Design (SDLP 187) and so I don't think that the LP on eBay is a fake.

Oliver has indeed a real big collection of near all records of VU, LOU and PRE-VU. But, please show me one collector who is complete? And I'm sure that Oliver will confirm you that this LP happend.

[I'll not idly invoke the Deity here] what is this?!

"Little Deuce Coupe" to these ears definitely is Lou. Maybe "Surfin'" too, although that's sung a bit too high to be comfortable to Lou's vocal chords. Guitars on all songs are too generic, can't make Lou's parts out there, although he must be there on one of the rhythm guitars. But my oh my, what commercialised kid-cheating drivel this is!

I hate how all those damn bloggers encode to MP3! What a waste!

I know it's bad netiquette to repeat what someone says, with a quick 'quoted for truth' and not contribute to the discussion at all, but in this case:

"Those Damn Bloggers" provide you with free music at their expense. He took his time converting the files from LP and then posting them on his site for everyone. He should be appreciated...not complained about.

Hi mg196

if it was flac or shn I'd praise him and his ancestors. As it is, now I have to explain to the people who are interested in this from me, the reasons not to circulate in 'converted from mp3' form. Then I end up in discussions that mp3 sounds as good as the real thing and stop being pedantic. So what starts as excitement ends in tension, all because I'm following 2 of the traders' credos: 'share the music' 'don't use lossy compression'. Sigh.
