Guys.....I've found this website via Black Cat Bone (another geeky music forum) which has a covers database. Here's a VU section which is quite comprehensive:

"If anyone had a heart
They wouldn't turn around & break it
And if anyone played a part
They wouldn't turn around & fake it"

Dutch beat band The Riats did a cover of "Run, Run, Run" on a 45 circa '67 or '68. The B-Side, I believe, was Sunday Morning. This track can be found on a bootleg comp of obscure Dutch beat called Highlights In The Lowlands. It is a strange version, as The Riats turn it into a poppy, organ driven number; removing much of the original's edge.

Also, in the "Uptight" book, mention is made via a letter from Lou Reed to Gerard Malanga whereby Lou gives his OK to the Italian band Equipe 84 to record a version of "Heroin." Does anyone know if this ever happened?

Resurrecting an old thread with info on a new cover:

Sunray (featuring Sonic Boom) - Ocean EP (12" vinyl, Earworm Records)

13 minute cover version of 'Ocean', apparently. Sonic Boom is the ex-Spacemen 3 member. The audio snippet at boomkat sounds quite nice.

You can hear the entire VU&N covered here. Billy Idol did quite a number on Heroin.

Speaking of covers, I heard a live cover of Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams in early July by Patrick Riguelle (Belgian artist) and friends. That's pretty rare, isn't it? And Absynthe Minded, another Belgian Band, covered Waiting For The Man (because I was yelling for it during the entire show, I can be quite the pest). Both covers were nice.

THE FEELIES MAN! How have they not been mentioned? They did Run Run Run/European Son/What Goes On as a medley, and also did WL/WH and Waiting for the Man along with covering numerous other acts.

Just came across a version of the Yardbirds with Jimmy Page doing a cover of Waiting For The Man at the Shrine Auditorium on May 31,1968. It starts off as Smokestack Lightning and then moves into WFTM before going back to Smokestack at the very end. The sound is kind of crappy, but it's interesting.

They evidently covered WFTM on other occasions as well. I haven't finishe downloading it yet but they did it again at the Fillmore West. I hope the sound on that one is a little better than the first one.

This obviously is not a cover, but I cannot think of a more appropriate place for this post.

There was also an Australian band using the VU name; the lead singer of which claimed to have no knowledge of Lou, Cale & Co. Rather, he claimed to have gotten the name from book of the same name, just like our heroes.

The Aussie VU discography is pretty slim, just one 45 consisting of West Coast covers: Somebody To Love/She Comes In Colors. The A-Side has been comped and is a pretty cool runthrough of the Airplane classic complete with opening burst of feedback that might have done Lou proud.

The Oz VU would eventually become AC/DC.....

"AC/DC was formed in 1973 in Australia by guitarist Malcolm Young after his band, the Velvet Underground, collapsed (Young's band has no relation to the seminal American group)."
